BOONE, N.C. – Winning its eighth game in a row, the University of South Alabama men's basketball team notched its second two-point win in two days (56-54) against Appalachian State Saturday afternoon in the Holmes Convocation Center.
South Alabama's (16-8, 10-5) Kayo Goncalves notched his second double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds with an assist and block. Tyreke Locure and Michael Flowers also reached double figures with 12 and 11 respectively while each grabbed five rebounds. John Pettway added nine points, three rebounds with a game-high four assists.
Appalachian State (12-9, 6-6) had three scorers reach double figures with Justin Forrest leading the game with 20 points. James Lewis Jr. collected a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Donovan Gregory added 10 points to round out the home side's double-digit scorers.
GAME FACTS
- South trailed at the first media break 9-7 with 14:44 left in the first half, after a foul by Goncalves. Locure and Goncalves each had a three early for USA.
- The Jags took a two-point lead, 18-16 at the 11:31 mark, when Locure completed a fast break with a layup. The Sophomore was pacing the squad with eight points to that point in the contest.
- USA increased the advantage to four, 31-27, at the half's final media break with three minutes six seconds remaining. South had converted 6-of-15 from behind the arc, with Goncalves contributing four makes.
- After the Mountaineers tied the game at 31, Pettway's long two beat the shot clock and gave South the lead (33-31) as time expired to end the first half after the made field goal.
- Back-to-back threes from the Mountaineers cut South's advantage to one, 42-41 with 13:38 remaining. Adrian Delph and Forrest combined for the home team's scoring, with Forrest collecting his game-leading 15th point.
- With fatigue becoming apparent as shots started falling short, the Jags went cold from the floor, missing eight straight field goals. The home side took advantage, by building a five-point lead, 49-44 with seven minutes remaining.
- South responded by holding the home side to no field goals in the final four minutes and 15 seconds of regulation, with Flowers putting USA up 56-53 with 67 seconds left after draining a contested jumper. The Mountaineers would add a free throw cut the advantage to two, but South held on with the final score reading 56-54.
- Committing a season-high tying 17 turnovers yesterday, The Jags committed a season-low tying seven in today's game.
- After being outscored 18-2 on second-chance points yesterday, South outscored App 8-4 today.
- The Jaguars recorded 12 assists on 20 made field goals.

- The Eight wins in a row has matched last season's win streak to close out the season.
- This was the sixth win in a row at Boone and 12th in the series with Appalachian State.
- Goncalves lead in scoring for the third time this season, with two occurring in the past three games.
- The Brazilian international has led USA in rebounding for the eighth time, which paces the team.
- Goncalves' second double-double is the fourth overall for the team; with all four occurring in Sun Belt Conference play.
- Flowers three field goal makes, and seven of his 11 points occurred in the second half.
- South used a six-man rotation for the second time in three games (Troy, 2/13).
