UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA FOOTBALL PRACTICE REPORT – 8/18

Date: 8/18
Time: 3:30-5:15 p.m. (CDT)
Place: Jaguar Training Center
Practice attire: Shells (helmets and shoulder pads)

Offensive Player of the Day: Carlos Davis, So., RB, Muscle Shoals, Ala.
-Offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield on Davis: "I thought today, once again, Carlos had a couple of really good runs.  He is stepping up to be the lead guy right now at that position, he's done a really good job all of camp."

Defensive Player of the Day: Keith Gallmon, Jr., S, Mobile, Ala.
-Defensive coordinator Greg Stewart on Gallmon: "Every day Keith has come out here and been consistent.  He's a guy who has played a lot of ball, and now he has gotten faster.  He was already smart, I can tell that he is a different player.  He says he knows where to line up and where to go, and he has his body right so we're counting on big things from him."

Play of the Day: With the offense facing third-and-seven in the second of three team periods, Jaden Voisin broke as the receiver cut to the sideline to deflect the pass and prevent the conversion.

Team period highlights: The Jaguar offense ran a mix of plays in two of three 10-minute team periods, and in between faced third down situations needing to convert from a variety of distances.

Miscellaneous Notes
-Voisin also recorded two passes defensed during 7-on-7 passing drills earlier in the afternoon.
-Maurice Strong Jr. was credited with sacks in two different team periods, following up the second with an additional stop behind the line in the final minutes of the workout.
-Riley Cole posted multiple sacks during team period action as well, with Jamie Sheriff also finishing the day with two tackles for loss.
-Jamel Thomas caught six passes combined in skeleton passing drills and team periods, leading a group of five individuals with multiple receptions.
-Joshua Carter intercepted a pass with the offense facing third-and-seven in one team period, and he ended the practice with a stop behind the line of scrimmage as well.
-After completing 7-of-10 attempts in South's 7-on-7 period, Desmond Trotter connected with Jalen Tolbert for a 30-yard gain and hit Thomas to pick up 35 yards in the first team period of the afternoon.
-Zeke Chapman and Roy Yancey had a pair of tackles for loss during team period action, with one of those for the former a sack.
-Chance Lovertich connected on 6-of-7 passes during team periods, which included finding Cade Sutherland for a pair of completions that resulted in first downs during third-down situations.
-The workout included two 10-minute special teams periods concentrating on punt and kickoff coverage, as well as a five-minute period on short-range field goals.
-All practices are closed to the general public.

Head coach Steve Campbell
-On Tuesday's practice: "I thought we had a good day, the players worked hard.  I felt the defense was a little ahead of the offense.  Last night, I thought the offense executed probably a little bit better than the defense.  It's a good little back-and-forth right now between those two groups.  I feel that we're continuing to improve in a lot of areas, although we still have a ways to go.  We're still in 'camp mode'; we haven't flipped the script to preparing for game one yet, so we're still working on fundamentals.  We still have some work to do, but I like the way the guys are working."
-On working on third downs today: "I thought the defense did a good job getting off the field [in the last scrimmage], they seemed to win first down and third down.  Today, we worked hard on our third down stuff offensively and we need to continue to work that."
-On the two players who were put on scholarship Monday night: "Terrion [Avery] is going to help us this year, he has a knack for finding the hole and gaining yards.  Today, he was able to pick up a big blitz on third down.  He's a guy who can play on every down, he can catch a ball out of the backfield.  He's a tremendously hard worker and has sacrificed a lot for this program.  He will play a lot this season, so it was good to be able to put him on scholarship.  Destin Myers is a guy we moved from linebacker to tight end a year ago to give us some depth.  By the time we got to the Arkansas State game, he was playing a lot.  He's continued to get better and improve.  He's a tough guy who plays a lot on special teams and plays 'super back' tight end for us.  We were proud to be able to put him on scholarship, he's a good football player."

Sophomore LB Joshua Carter
-On what he's worked on during fall camp that has put him in position to be part of the team's linebacker rotation: "Learning the plays has been very big for me.  I've also been able to use my speed to my advantage.  I'm not the biggest guy on the field, but I feel my intelligence and speed have helped me out-compete my opponents."
-On what he was doing today that helped him be in position to make plays: "I feel I could have made more plays; I missed a pick, but I was just reading the offense and knew what to do.  I was reading my keys and staying patient.  A lot of players aren't very patient, but I feel like my patience has really helped me with my game."
-On his expectations for the fall: "I'm trying to win a conference championship, that's everybody's goal out here."

Junior WR Jamel Thomas
-On what he has done in camp to get in the team's receiver rotation: "Camp has been going well so far, I've just been trying to lock in and stay focused.  I want to make sure I know all the plays and that I am doing everything right."
-On his performance in Tuesday's practice: "Today I trusted my speed, I was going out there and just running trying to find open spots."
-On what he learned while redshirting that has helped him in preseason camp: "You have to stay focused and always show up to practice.  You need to consistently make plays, you can't afford to have a bad day."

Up next: South is scheduled to practice at Hancock Whitney Stadium on Wednesday, with the workout set to start at 3:30 p.m.
