Opening Kick
• The Jaguars close out November with their final match-up against a fellow Sun Belt Conference West Division opponent.
• It's the last time South will go on the road during the 2020 regular season.
• USA last won on the road in league play on Oct. 11, 2017, when it defeated Troy.
• The Jags are looking for their first victory away from home in November since picking up a 38-17 win at Georgia State on Nov. 30, 2013.
• South head coach Steve Campbell led Central Arkansas to a 28-23 defeat of the Red Wolves on their home field on Sept. 24, 2016.
South Alabama-Arkansas State Series Notes
• After dropping the first five match-ups in the series, the Jags have won two of the last three meetings.
• A-State has claimed all four contests in Jonesboro, with the last three decided by a double-figure margin.
• The Red Wolves have posted 30-plus points in three of the first four meetings at home, with the exception a 17-7 A-State victory on Oct. 15, 2016.
• After scoring 29 points in its first visit to Jonesboro, South has totaled 31 combined in its last three games at A-State.
• Last year's match-up in Mobile was the first in which the winning score was recorded after the midway point of the final quarter since the Red Wolves rallied for a 17-16 victory on Nov. 2, 2013.
Notes From The Last Arkansas State Meeting
• In addition to setting a school game record for touchdown receptions, Jalen Tolbert posted the most receiving yards by a Jag last fall with his first career 100-yard contest.
• Tra Minter became the first 1,000-yard rusher in school history.
• Desmond Trotter recorded the most passing and total offense yards by a South player in 2019 as well.
• It was both the highest total offense and first down figures for the Jaguar offense against an NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision opponent a year ago.
• South's defense was credited with a season-high sack total.
Notes On Campbell's Coaching/Playing Career
• Campbell's 167-78 mark as a head coach includes going 33-15 over four years at Central Arkansas from 2014-17, where he guided the Bears to back-to-back NCAA Football Championship Subdivision playoff appearances before taking over at South Alabama.
• He has led two programs to national championships — Delta (Miss.) State in 2000 at the NCAA Division II level and Mississippi Gulf Coast C.C. to the 2007 National Junior College Athletic Association crown.
• In 20 seasons no team coached by Campbell finished below .500 prior to the 2018 campaign.
• Campbell has coached on the staffs of Pat Dye (Auburn graduate assistant, 1988-89) and Jackie Sherrill (Mississippi State assistant, 2003).
• Campbell and Jaguar coordinators Kenny Edenfield and Greg Stewart were teammates on Troy's 1987 NCAA Division II national championship squad.
Take It Away
South forced four turnovers — all in the opening half — last time out against Georgia State, which was the most takeaways the Jaguar defense has posted since recording six in a Nov. 11, 2017, victory over Arkansas State; that was also the last time the unit caused four turnovers in a half prior to the match-up with the Panthers.  USA intercepted three passes for the first time since the 2018 season opener against Louisiana Tech, with Devin Rockette the first Jag to record his second of the season while Christian Bell and Shawn Jennings became the second and third Jaguar linebackers to post their first career interceptions this fall.  The Jaguars had intercepted three passes in their first eight contests in 2020 coming into the contest.
Tallying Tackles
That's what junior Nick Mobley has been doing for the Jaguar defense the last two weeks, as he was credited with a double-figure tackle total for the second straight outing for the first time in his career after leading all players with a career-best 16 in the match-up with the Panthers. Â It was the most stops by a Jag since Nigel Lawrence finished with 17 when South visited A-State on Nov. 3, 2018, with the total including his first tackle for loss in more than a year; he last made a stop behind the line at Texas State on Nov. 9 last fall.
Cole Continues Stellar Season
In addition to forcing a fumble for the fourth takeaway recorded by USA last weekend, LB Riley Cole ended the contest with 11 stops as he became the ninth individual in program history to surpass 200 in a career. Â The senior's four outings with 10 or more tackles is most on the team this year, with three of those efforts coming since the Jaguars began Sun Belt action against Texas State on Oct. 17.
Touchdown Time
Carlos Davis opened the scoring in the GSU game with a 17-yard touchdown run less than two minutes after the opening kick, his first score dating back to when South defeated Texas State last month. Â Fellow sophomore Jared Wilson later reached the end zone from seven yards out in the third quarter to give South a 14-7 advantage, marking the first time in over a year he has recorded a touchdown having last accomplished the feat on Nov. 16 a year ago against Louisiana. Â Wilson became the third individual to lead the Jags on the ground in the last three weeks after finishing the contest with a season-best 49 yards on just seven attempts after entering play with 34 yards in the USA's first eight games this fall.
Hot To Trot
Trotter completed a career-best 25 passes (in 43 attempts) against the Panthers, recording 211 yards to move into fifth place on the school's all-time list as he has now thrown for 2,351 yards since the beginning of last season. Â With 1,571 yards of total offense this fall he entered the top 10 in the season record books in the category following the contest, while his 58 total offense attempts tied the most in a game in program history (Dallas Davis had 58 at Idaho on Nov. 26, 2016).
Tolbert Totals Climbing Higher
Tolbert led the Jaguar receiving corps for the second straight contest after posting 75 yards on five catches, making it the fifth time this fall he has paced the squad in the category. Â The junior passed both Bryant Lavender and current Los Angeles Ram Gerald Everett to move into sixth place in South's record books as he now has 1,322 yards dating back to the beginning of the 2018 campaign.
Baker Busy
WR Kawaan Baker shared game-high honors last time out with five receptions while recording 59 all-purpose yards with an additional two carries and a kickoff return. Â With the effort, the senior entered the top 10 on South's season record charts in both receiving and all-purpose yards as he now has 608 and 873, respectively.
