Opening Kick
• The Jags conclude a stretch of three straight games on the road with a visit to the Ragin' Cajuns.
• The match-up features the two teams at the top of the Sun Belt Conference West Division standings.
• With the Louisiana reentering the Associated Press poll on Sunday, this will be the first time that the Jaguars will play nationally-ranked opponents in back-to-back outings.
• It's also the second straight season that USA will take on multiple top-25 foes.
• South is looking for its first win in Louisiana since defeating Tulane, 41-39, in New Orleans on Sept. 7, 2013.
• D.J. Looney, who passed away prior to the start of the season, coached tight ends and tackles on the staff of current Jaguar head coach Steve Campbell at Central Arkansas in 2014-15.
South Alabama-Louisiana Series Notes
• All but one of the games between the two schools — a Sept. 17 meeting in 2016 — have been played in the final month-plus of the regular season.
• The Ragin' Cajuns have won four straight contests in the series after the two teams split the first four match-ups.
• Each of the last six games between the two programs have been decided by 10 points or less.
• The winning team has posted 30 or more points on five occasions in the eight contests in the series.
• The school that has won each of the last five match-ups has run for over 200 yards in the contest, with the two programs surpassing that total both of the last two seasons.
Notes From The Last Louisiana Meeting
• Not only was the Jaguar rushing total in the contest their highest against a Sun Belt opponent, it was the most South has recorded against any NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision school.
• In leading that effort with 137 yards, Tra Minter became the third Jag to rush for more than 2,000 yards in a career.
• Carlos Davis recorded the first 100-yard outing of his career, giving USA two individuals with a triple-digit rushing total for the first time since Oct. 24, 2014.
• It was the second time in a four-game stretch that Riley Cole led the Jaguars in tackles after accomplishing the feat once the previous three years combined.
• WR Cade Sutherland paced the Jaguars in receiving yards for the second time in three outings while leading all players in the category for the first occasion in his career.
Notes On Campbell's Coaching/Playing Career
• Campbell's 167-76 mark as a head coach includes going 33-15 over four years at Central Arkansas from 2014-17, where he guided the Bears to back-to-back NCAA Football Championship Subdivision playoff appearances before taking over at South Alabama.
• He has led two programs to national championships — Delta (Miss.) State in 2000 at the NCAA Division II level and Mississippi Gulf Coast C.C. to the 2007 National Junior College Athletic Association crown.
• In 20 seasons no team coached by Campbell finished below .500 prior to the 2018 campaign.
• Campbell has coached on the staffs of Pat Dye (Auburn graduate assistant, 1988-89) and Jackie Sherrill (Mississippi State assistant, 2003).
• Campbell and Jaguar coordinators Kenny Edenfield and Greg Stewart were teammates on Troy's 1987 NCAA Division II national championship squad.
Cole Shines Against The Chants
Cole led all players with a career-high-tying 15 tackles last Saturday at 15th-ranked Coastal Carolina, marking the third time this season and fourth in his career that the senior has posted a double-digit total in the category. Thirteen of those stops were recorded over the final three quarters of the contest, with his efforts leading a Jaguar defense that allowed just three field goals during that stretch while limiting the Chanticleers to a season-low point total. The linebacker contributed to one of South's two takeaways with a fumble recovery in the third period, and he was also credited with a quarterback hurry in the game.
Gallmon Gets In On The Action Too
S Keith Gallmon chipped in with 10 stops last time out against the Chanticleers, making it the second time this season that he has reached double figures in tackles after turning the trick once in his first 23 games as a Jaguar the last two seasons. It was also the second time this year that he and Cole have recorded 10-plus tackles in the same contest, with the duo accomplishing the feat in South's season-opening victory over Southern Mississippi on Sept. 3 as well.
Baker's Mark
With an 11-yard catch in the third quarter at Coastal, Kawaan Baker became the school's all-time leader in receiving yards; he ended the contest with 1,698 in his career after catching three balls for 20 yards in the game. The performance also made the senior wide receiver one of six individuals in program history to go over 2,500 all-purpose yards in a career.
Sophomore Kicker Supplies All The Scoring
Diego Guajardo converted both of his field-goal attempts — hitting from 31 and 43 yards out in the opening half — against the Chanticleers to become the sixth player in the school's record books to connect on 10 or more field goals in a season, and the first to do so in Campbell's three years in charge of the program. It was the first time since USA defeated Texas State on Oct. 17 that the sophomore has made multiple field goals in a game, and the third occasion this fall he has accomplished the feat.
Trotter Adds Name to Season Record Lists
A week-and-a-half ago Jaguar QB Desmond Trotter entered his name into the top 10 in three different categories on the program's season and career record lists with his effort at Georgia Southern, a feat he would once again achieve last time out at Coastal. The sophomore completed 23-of-31 attempts for 243 yards and is now on pace to set school season standards in both completion percentage and pass efficiency rating with current marks of 70.1 and 166.23, respectively, while also becoming South's all-time leader on the latter list (minimum 200 attempts) with a 159.99 passing rating since the start of last season.
Back to Making Tackles
Before the Jags visited the Eagles on Oct. 29, LB Nick Mobley had never been credited with fewer than three stops in his first 29 outings with the program dating back to the beginning of the 2018 campaign. After not recording a stop in that contest, the junior bounced back to finish with seven against the Chanticleers last weekend and become the eighth player in program history to record 200 or more stops in a career.
Wayne Leads The Way
Coming into the season, junior Jalen Wayne had never led the team in either catches or receiving yards in a contest. He accomplished the first feat with a team-high-tying six receptions for 101 yards in South's season-opening defeat of USM and has now achieved the latter after recording 91 yards on five catches at Coastal Carolina. In fact, Wayne had posted 105 receiving yards in the previous four games combined.
Betts' Numbers Getting Better
Junior-college transfer Dewayne Betts Jr. recorded two stops in his first three appearances with the program this fall but has seen his production rise since the Jaguars began Sun Belt play against Texas State on Oct. 17. After finishing with three tackles in the win over the Bobcats, Betts has recorded a career high in the category two of the last three times out after collecting seven in the match-up with the Chants. In addition to being credited with his first forced fumble of the year — which was recovered by Cole to give South possession at the CCU-43 late in the third quarter — he added his first pass break up since USA played host to Tulane on Sept. 12.
