UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA FOOTBALL PRACTICE REPORT – 8/13

Date: 8/13
Time: 9:30-11:20 a.m. (CDT)
Place: James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility
Practice attire: Helmets and shorts, no pads

Offensive Player of the Day: None
-Offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield on the Jaguar offense: "I thought there were a lot of guys who tried to get better today, but it was a learning day in helmets so I don't know if we had one individual who stood out.  Offensively our focus was on getting lined up faster between plays, I think we improved on that."

Defensive Player of the Day: Sean Brown, Sr, DL, Pleasant Grove, Ala.
-Defensive coordinator Greg Stewart on Brown: "Today I was looking for a guy with leadership to help guys when it got real hot and they didn't think they could make it through, Sean did a good job with that.  I've noticed that he is working real hard, Sean had a very good day."

Play of the Day: The play of the day occurred on the third play of the four series of downs during the 7-on-7 period. Tylan Morton was able to connect with Kawaan Baker for a 25-yard scoring strike as his pass split a pair of defenders and was hauled in by a diving Baker for a touchdown.

Team period highlights: The Jags had two 10-minute team periods where the offense and defense worked separately rather than in a competition format.

Miscellaneous Notes
-In the only competitive period of the day, the South offense ran 20 snaps in a 7-on-7 skeleton drill.
-The Jaguar quarterbacks missed four of their first five pass attempts, but bounced back to connect on 11 of their next 13 attempts during the 10-minute segment.
-A total of 10 different receivers recorded at least one reception with running backs Tra Minter and Damean Bivens catching two apiece out of the backfield.
-Morton's touchdown pass to Baker was the lone score for the Jaguar offense on the day.
-On the defensive side of the ball during the only competition period between the offensive and defensive units, Travis Reid, Brentt Cunningham and Jay Woods were credited with a pair of tackles.
-Reid and Keon Voisin also had a pass breakup during the drill.
-The Jaguars had five different special teams segments during the practice session which accounted for roughly 40 minutes of the morning practice.
-The nearly two-hour session concluded with two special teams segments for a combined 15 minutes with the first being a 10-minute period focusing on kickoff coverage.
-All practices are closed to the general public.

Head coach Steve Campbell
-On today's practice: "Today was a good day. We covered a lot of stuff that we needed to cover at this point in camp. We banged around pretty good Saturday and pretty good yesterday, and with the scrimmage tomorrow, we wanted to back off just a tad on the physicality and make sure that we're assignment sound. We covered a lot of short-yardage and goal line situations, along with some other special situations. We also worked on things in our kicking game from our hands team, to our onside and sky kicks, as well as our pooch kicks. Today we were able to cover a lot of different scenarios and work on some things that needed shoring up before our second scrimmage."
-On what he's looking for in Wednesday's scrimmage: "It's a double-edged sword. Offensively, we need to create more explosive plays. Defensively, we need to do a good job again of limiting the explosive plays. The thing that I want to carry over from the first scrimmage to the second scrimmage is our ball security. We didn't put the ball on the ground and I want to see that continue. We were able to create some turnovers as our secondary did a good job of breaking on some balls. [Our quarterbacks] have to do a better job of knowing when a throw is there and when to get rid of it and play the next play. We need a little more production out of our run game. We tackled well for it being our first scrimmage, but I want to see us take the next step in this next scrimmage."
-On the special teams unit: "Tomorrow is a big day for us. We've got some good stuff on film from the first scrimmage. It definitely wasn't game-ready following the first scrimmage, but it's not going to be. We've worked both kickoff and kick return, as well as our punt return team hard since the first scrimmage. We've had about three or four good sessions of each and hopefully we'll see some strides made in each one of those facets tomorrow."

Up next: South Alabama will return to the practice field Wednesday for its second scrimmage. The scrimmage is scheduled to be held 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility and is closed to the general public.
