WILSON NAMED SUN BELT PLAYER & FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR, TWO JAGS EARN ALL-SUN BELT HONORS

NEW ORLEANS – University of South Alabama outfielder Ethan Wilson was named the 2019 Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year, as announced by the league office Monday.

Wilson was also a First-Team All-Sun Belt selection in the outfield, while right-hander Zach Greene was also named First-Team All-Sun Belt at relief pitcher.

Wilson is the first freshman to be named Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year, and the first Jaguar to earn the award since Jordan Patterson in 2013. Wilson is the first Jag to be named Sun Belt Freshman of the Year since David Doss in 2006, and the first Jaguar outfielder to earn the award since Tim Merritt in 1999.

Wilson led the Sun Belt in slugging percentage (.693) and total bases (149), tied for the league lead in triples (4) and runs scored (58), ranked second in batting average (.344), hits (74) and home runs (17), fifth in on-base percentage (.454), tied for fifth in RBIs (51) and doubles (16), and 10th in walks (36). His First-Team selection marks the fifth straight year a Jaguar outfielder has earned First-Team All-Sun Belt honors.

Greene finished the regular season ranked second in the Sun Belt in saves (13). In 26 regular-season appearances, he struck out 66 batters and issued seven walks in 47 2/3 innings, and went 2-0 with a 0.94 ERA. He is the first Jaguar reliever to earn All-Sun Belt honors since Ben Taylor in 2015.

Greene became the program's single-season save leader with his 13th save of the season in a May 12 win at Appalachian State, passing Kyle Bartsch (2013) and Mike Nakamura (1995) on the school's list. He enters the Sun Belt Conference Tournament with 18 career saves, which ranks tied for second on the program's all-time list with Blaine Dollar (1971-74).

Coastal Carolina's Jake Wright was voted the Sun Belt Newcomer of the Year, Texas State's Connor Reich was named the Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Year and Texas State head coach Ty Harrington was voted the Ron Maestri Coach of the Year.
