MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama Department of Athletics had just under 100 student-athletes honored at Tuesday's Scholar-Athlete Breakfast, which was held at the University Student Center Ballroom.
A total of 99 student-athletes were recognized at the event, which celebrated individuals earning a 3.5 grade-point average or better during the fall semester; the group was highlighted by 35 competitors who recorded a 4.0 GPA. In all, 11 South sport programs had a cumulative group GPA above a 3.0 in the fall, with nine of those teams over a 3.30 figure for the semester.
The cross country team was recognized not only for having the highest fall semester GPA among the school's men's programs but for the most improved mark from the previous spring. The women's teams honored for their performances last fall were tennis for earning the best grade-point average and soccer for recording the most improved mark.
In addition, Drs. John and Sally Steadman — the Dean of the College of Engineering and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs, respectively — were highlighted for their support of Jaguar Athletics both in the classroom and with their attendance at numerous events.
"First, I would like to thank University President Dr. Tony Waldrop for hosting this truly wonderful event and for the support he provides to not only our student-athletes but to the entire student body," Associate Athletic Director/Athletic Academic Services Jason Kelly said. "The large number of individuals being recognized is not by accident; it is due to the effort that these student-athletes direct toward their academic success as well as the emphasis our coaches put on academic achievement. Today was also a day to recognize the many educators who were invited by our student-athletes. We appreciate their dedication to our students and the passion they show in helping them become well-rounded, successful individuals not only in the classroom but also in the community."
