MOBILE, Ala. – Three Jaguar pitchers combined to shut out Texas State 1-0 Saturday in game two of the weekend series at Stanky Field.
Right-handers JoJo Booker, Chase Lambert and Zach Greene combined for the shutout, which is the first since May 25, 2018, when USA defeated Georgia Southern 12-0 in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. South Alabama (10-6, 2-0 Sun Belt) clinched the series with the win, and will attempt to sweep the three-game set in Sunday's series finale at 1 p.m.
GAME FACTS
- South Alabama scored the game's first run in the bottom of the third. Nick Lewis reached on a hit by pitch to lead off the inning, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Brandon Auerbach, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a suicide squeeze by Bennett Shell for a 1-0 lead.Â
- Texas State (11-8, 0-2 Sun Belt) put two runners in scoring position with two outs in the top of the seventh, but failed to push across a run. Dalton Shuffield and Travon Benton reached on consecutive one-out singles, and each moved into scoring position with two outs on a double steal. But Jaguar right-hander Zach Greene induced an inning-ending flyout to right field off the bat of Jaxon Williams to preserve a one-run Jaguar lead.
NOTES
- Kaleb DeLaTorre extended his on-base streak to seven games with a two-out walk in the bottom of the sixth inning.Â
- Booker tossed six shutout innings, and allowed four hits while striking out four with three walks to earn his second win of the season.
- Right-hander Zach Greene tossed 2 2/3 scoreless innings, and struck out four while allowing two hits to record his fourth save of the year.
- Right-hander Chase Lambert tossed one-third of an inning to combine in the shuout.
- Auerbach extended his on-base streak to seven games with a leadoff single in the eighth inning.
- Ethan Wilson's on-base streak and hitting streak were snapped at 15 and six games, respectively.
- The win marked the Jaguars' first 1-0 victory since March 7, 2015, when they defeated Little Rock by the same score at Stanky Field.
- The win also extended USA's win streak against Texas State at Stanky Field to five games.
QUOTES
Head Coach Mark Calvi
- On the win:
"Offense comes and goes. Texas State has really good arms, and there are really good arms in this league. The two things you cannot win without are pitching and defense, and we got both of those tonight. Offense was limited for both clubs. We saw a really good guy (Hunter McMahon) on their (Texas State) side, and they saw a few really good guys on our side on a cold night with the wind blowing in. We knew it was going to be a low-scoring ballgame if there were no errors and walks were limited, and it was tonight. I'm just glad we were on the winning side of that one."
- On JoJo Booker's performance:
"A couple of pitches didn't go his way, and before he would get frustrated and try to throw 98 (mph) and it didn't work well for him. He's just maturing as a pitcher. He is a better pitcher (this season); his stuff is better. I have seen his stuff better and more electric, but tonight his emotions – and that's the key for him. He has good stuff, and when he controls himself he has chance to keep us in every ballgame and give us a chance to win and that's what he did."
- On the suicide squeeze in the third inning:
"It was perfectly executed. We work on that all the time; it's part of our offense, and we dedicate part of our batting practice time to that. We have done it for a long time, and that's what we need to do. We did a really nice job of it tonight. Bennett Shell got it down against a really good pitcher. Nick Lewis wore a pitch in the ribs on a cold night, and I'm sure that didn't feel good but any way to get on (base). I give their guy (McMahon) credit; he was nasty. He had good stuff and touched 94 or 95 tonight. He was better than advertised."
RHP JoJo Booker
- On the shuout:
"It feels really good. I felt great all night, and had command of all of my pitches. It just feels great to get a win, especially games like that. It makes it even more fun. And Zach (Greene) coming in and closing it – that's a huge deal. He closed the game last night, and being able to come in back-to-back (games) will help us the rest of the year."
- On his effort:
"I had command of every pitch tonight. I felt like I knew where everything was going every time I threw the ball. The changeup was a big deal for me tonight."
- On clinching the series:
"That's a big deal. We knew coming in that they (Texas State) were going to be good. They are going to keep winning games and make a run in the Sun Belt just like we will."
