NEW ORLEANS, La. - Savannah Jones named the Sun Belt Women's Basketball Player of the Week as announced by the league office on Monday, Feb. 4. This is the first time in her two-year career that Jones has been the recipient of the award and fourth time this season that a University of South Alabama women's basketball player has been honored by the Sun Belt. 

After having this past Thursday off, the Jaguars hosted in-state rival Troy at the Mitchell Center on Saturday afternoon. The redshirt sophomore guard posted a career high 31 points in the 80-77 win over the Trojans and was a major factor for the Jags down the stretch. Jones connected on a three-pointer to put the Jaguars up by one with 1:05 left to play, and hit three free-throws in crunch time to seal the deal. 

It was Jones' second 30 point game of the season and 15th game in double-figures for the Jaguars. For the game, Jones shot 4-of-7 from behind the arc and 11-of-19 from the floor to lead her team in scoring for the seventh time this year. 

The reigning Freshman of the Year in the Sun Belt, and 2018-19 preseason first team all-conference honoree, is averaging 16.6 points per game in conference play this season, and ranks third in the Sun Belt with a .452 three-point field-goal percentage. 

Jones joins teammate Antoinette Lewis on the list of South Alabama players to bring home the hardware this season. Lewis was most recently named the player of the week on Mon. Jan 28, for the third time this season. The duo has combined for four awards so far, tying the mark set by the 1995-96 squad for most awards in a single South Alabama women's basketball season.
