Opening Tip
• The Jaguars and Rams meet for the first time since the 2014-15 campaign.
• The Jags have won all six of the meetings between the two schools, with five of those coming on South's campus.
• The most recent match-up between the two programs is the only one in the series decided by a single-digit margin, although the Jaguars' 81-68 victory at the Port City Classic on Dec. 17, 1998, came in overtime.
• This will be the first of two contests against non-NCAA Division I schools prior to the start of Sun Belt Conference action; William Carey will visit the Mitchell Center on Dec. 17 as well.
• USA has claimed 25 straight regular-season games against non-Division I competition dating back to a Feb. 25, 1990, loss at Alaska-Anchorage.
Career Night For Kines Against Crimson Tide
Shaforia Kines led all players in the Jags' last outing against Alabama on Thursday, scoring a career-best 29 points including making a career-high 6 shots from beyond the three-point arc (in 12 attempts). Not only was it the first time that she has scored more than 20 points in a contest since the senior posted 23 points in a win over Troy at the Sun Belt Conference Tournament on March 14 last year, but she also paced South with four assists and three steals. Kines has reached double digits in the scoring column four times in the team's first five games this year, most on the squad.
Jones Not Just A Shooter
G Savannah Jones connected on 4-of-10 three-point attempts against the Crimson Tide — equaling her high this year first set in a Nov. 14 defeat of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi — to draw within two treys of tying Sarda Peterson for the school's all-time record in the category having now hit 175 since the start of the 2016-17 season. The redshirt junior didn't just impact the game offensively, however, as in addition to finishing with 15 points (Jones was the only other Jaguar in double figures other than Kines) she added a career-best three blocked shots on the other end of the floor.
Passing Her Boards Test
Junior Antoinette Lewis grabbed nine rebounds — including the 600th of her career — in the Alabama contest, marking the fifth time in as many outings this year that she has led the Jags in the category. That's the longest streak of topping the squad on the boards since the center turned the trick in eight straight outings from Dec. 17-Jan. 17 last season, and the most games in a row leading South in rebounding to open the year since Jessica Webb accomplished the feat in the first five contests of the 1999-00 campaign.
Defending Long-Distance Attempts
The Crimson Tide managed to connect on just 3-of-16 three-point field-goal attempts last time out, the second time in the last three outings that USA has limited the opposition below 20 percent shooting from long distance. The Jaguars have held their opponents to 23.4-percent shooting during that span after allowing foes to sink 38.8 percent of their three-point shots the first two contests of the month.
Additional Notes From The Alabama Game
• South connected on a season-high 11 three-point field goals, while its 42.3 percentage from beyond the arc was also the team's best figure thus far this year.
• It was the first time since a trip to Coastal Carolina on Feb. 17, 2018, that 50 percent or more of the Jaguars' field goals have come from three-point range; USA made 17 total shots from the floor against the Crimson Tide.
• The Jaguars finished the night with a season-best eight blocks as Lewis matched Jones with a team-high three.
• South has been outrebounded by its opponent in each of the last four contests after winning the battle of the boards against Rutgers in the opener on Nov. 5.
• The Jag bench has now been outscored 120-31 by the opposition in the team's first five games after Alabama's reserves posted a 40-1 advantage over USA's substitutes.
