MOBILE, Ala. – University of South Alabama softball head coach announced the addition of right-handed pitcher Jamie Finnical to the roster Friday afternoon. Finnical (pronounced Finn-uh-cole) joins the Jaguars after transferring from Elon University.
"Jamie is a right-handed pitcher who will add depth to our pitching staff," head coach Becky Clark said. "She has good velocity and competes on the mound. One of the things that stood out to us was her work ethic and overall competitiveness. She wants the ball in her hand and isn't afraid to challenge hitters."
Finnical – who began classes at South on Tuesday – now brings South's newcomer class to six, as she joins incoming freshmen Kennedy Cronan, Caroline Nichols, Victoria Ortiz, Lauren Stringer and Samantha Yarbrough. She will have three years of eligibility.
In her one season at Elon, Finnical appeared in 11 games making four starts in the circle as a true freshman, finishing with a 1-2 record. The 5-foot-9 pitcher posted the second-lowest earned run average on the squad at 2.76 in 33.0 innings of work, and had the lowest ERA on the team during Colonial Athletic play. She tossed a season-best 6.0 innings in a 1-0 loss at Duke as she scattered six hits and struck out a season-best four batters. The lone run allowed to the Blue Devils in the loss was a first-inning solo home run.
Finnical also threw 5.0 scoreless innings in game two of the series against James Madison and allowed just two hits against Dukes. In her two outings in the series against the Dukes who were receiving votes at the time and ended the season ranked among the top 25 in the nation, she allowed just one earned run in her 8.1 innings of work.
The Reistertown, Md., native allowed one earned run or less in eight of her 11 outings during the season.
