UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA FOOTBALL PRACTICE REPORT – 8/14

Date: 8/14
Time: 3-5 p.m. (CDT)
Place: Jaguar Training Center
Practice attire: Shells (helmets and shoulder pads)

Offensive Players of the Day: Roy Albritton, Jr., OL, Pensacola, Fla. and Jamarius Way, Sr., WR, Belle Glade, Fla.
-Offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield on McCray: "Roy has gotten a lot better, he was a defensive lineman who was moved over and since the spring has been showing signs of improvement; he had a good day today.  Jamarius has had a great year, he's practiced hard even though sometimes the ball won't come his way.  Today he challenged the offense and then went out and made a play.  I'm proud of both of those guys."

Defensive Player of the Day: Chason Milner, Sr., DE, Spanish Fort, Ala.
-Defensive coordinator Greg Stewart on Milner: "Chason is a guy who has been here for a while, but has stepped it up and has been really consistent and a good team leader.  I see him showing up and coming to work every day, Chason is doing a good job."

Play of the Day: With a few to choose from, the play of the day came on a twisting, one-handed reception by Cade Sutherland near the end of the third team period of the afternoon.  Other candidates — all recorded during team periods as well — included another one-handed grab by TE Khameron Taylor, a Travis Reed interception that saw the cornerback go over the intended receiver to make the play and a contested 40-yard touchdown catch by Way.

Team period highlights: The first three team periods of the day lasted 10 minutes each, while the fourth was a 15-minute segment to conclude the workout.

Miscellaneous Notes
-Following practice, individuals head coach Steve Campbell cited for their performance thus far in the preseason included Tra Minter, Deonta Moore, Jared Wilson, Darian Mills, Nigel Lawrence and Malcolm Buggs.
-All three of Way's receptions in the final half of the workout came in the last team period.
-Jahmmir Taylor and Jalin Buie had touchdown catches as well in team period action.
-Cole Garvin connected on all six of his pass attempts in the final period of the afternoon.
-Tyree Turner had a sack in the offense's blitz pick-up period, and later added a tackle for loss on a run up the middle.
-Chris Henderson posted solo and assisted sacks on consecutive snaps in the same blitz pick-up period.
-In addition to Reed, Darian Mills and Tobias Moss picked off passes.
-Defensively, DJ Daniels contributed a pass defensed and Courtney Bowman was credited with a stop behind the line of scrimmage as well.
-The practice included two special teams periods, the first lasting 10 minutes midway through the day and the second a five-minute segment following the third team period of the workout.
-All practices are closed to the general public.

Head coach Steve Campbell
-On the team's practices since Saturday's scrimmage: "I thought yesterday we had a really good practice, it was probably our best practice offensively since we've been here — that's including the spring; we had a good scrimmage and backed it up with a great Monday.  The defense rebounded a little bit from the scrimmage and Monday, they bounced back and had a much better day today.  Offensively, I didn't see the progress I wanted to see early in practice but then we picked it up in the last segment of practice.  It was the first time that we've been a little up and down, we had been growing by leaps and bounds over a period of a couple of days — I was really pleased with the progress we were making — and though I think we got better today the progress slowed a little bit.  We need to come back and finish the week really strong."
-On how developed the team's depth chart is at this point in fall camp: "There are a lot of spots where guys have shown up and solidified that they are going to play.  Everybody is looking for a starter, but we're looking for players and we're blessed at some positions to have more than one guy who is a good football player; if we have more than one guy at a spot who is a good football player, they are going to play.  We need a couple of guys to step up on both sides of the line of scrimmage, but I think we know who our top four receivers are although five and six can help us as well.  There are some spots that are still open and there are some where we have a really good idea, but we want to keep seeing the young guys continue to get better."
-On practicing in preparation for the first few opponents of the season: "As a coaching staff we've kind of game-planned for our first three opponents, but we haven't put any of that in yet; you can get in trouble putting that stuff in too early.  Right now we are still worried about us and trying to get as good as we can possibly get working on fundamentals.  You break down your first three opponents before the summer starts so that when you start installing stuff hopefully it's what you will be running those first three games.  We still have another full week before we'll start looking exclusively at Louisiana Tech."

Up next: The Jaguars will practice again on campus starting at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
