Miscellaneous Notes
-This was the first full scrimmage of preseason camp for the Jaguars.
-South's offense ran just under one hundred plays in less than two hours, averaging over 5.3 yards per snap.
-The Jag defense was credited with 12 stops behind the line of scrimmage — three of those tackles were sacks — along with a pair of pass break ups.
-Five of the offense's scoring drives came on possessions beginning at its own 30-yard line, while the final four successful marches began in defensive territory.
-The first scoring drive, which was also the longest in number of plays, came on the offense's second possession of the scrimmage.
-Senior QBs Cole Garvin and Evan Orth combined to complete 25-of-29 attempts for 331 yards to help lead a unit that gained 397 yards through the air; both threw for two touchdowns, with Garvin connecting on 10 of his first 11 passes.
-A total of 17 individuals hauled in at least one reception, with seven of those players accounting for multiple catches.
-Sean Grayer, Chris Henderson and Charles Coleman III recorded the defense's sacks, while both of Darius Whitfield's stops were behind the line of scrimmage.
-Four of Corliss Waitman's six punts covered 50 or more yards.

Head coach Steve Campbell
On what he saw in the scrimmage: "I saw a lot of good stuff.  One of the things you always gauge yourself on the first scrimmage is conditioning, I thought the guys came out and showed they are in good condition; that's a tribute to the work they put in over the summer, Coach [Lance] Ancar and his staff have the guys in really good shape.  Offensively some guys made some plays — I was pleased to see that — I thought we did a good job of protecting the football for the most part and we kept ourselves out of negative situations, that's encouraging."
On where the team is after the first full week of camp: "I think we are about where I would've hoped we would be after one week.  We've stayed relatively healthy, we've had an injury or two but guys have stepped up in spots where we've had a guy get hurt.  With that being said, we've got another full week and we need to keep improving and we've still got some more installation to do.  Our tempo is not where we need it to be, there are a couple of things we still need to get squared away, but after one week I'm pleased — though not satisfied — with where we are at.  We've used every day so far to improve, which is encouraging."
On Jamall Hickbottom: "I need to watch the film from today, but throughout camp Jamall has shown that he is going to be a heck of a football player; we thought that, that's the reason we signed him.  He is a guy I identified when I was at Central Arkansas who I thought was going to be a great football player, I didn't think we could get him up there but when I came here he was committed to South Alabama."
On Malik Stanley: "Malik is a big, physical receiver with great hands.  We've had some great receivers over the years, and they looked like Malik.  He's a hard worker and a very unselfish guy, he has a chance to be a special player."

Junior LB Bull Barge
-On how the scrimmage was for the defense: "I thought it went pretty well.  We had a lot of young players playing out there, so there were some busts, but those guys were just trying to make plays.  They probably saw something that made them get out of their gap, but they were trying to make plays so we understand that.  As a collective group though, I felt that we got better tonight.  We treated today as if it were a real game, and had been telling guys all week that this was going to be an evaluation day.  I felt like our young guys really came out and played well for this being their first official scrimmage."
-On how he is looked on as a leader: "I feel that everyone has bought in and that everyone looks at me as a leader.  We have guys that have bought into the program.  They believe in the guys that have been appointed leaders.  Those guys have been great teammates and we are thankful for them."

Junior QB Cole Garvin
-On how the quarterbacks and the offensive performed in the first scrimmage: "Offensively, I think we looked really good; we were sharp and clean.  I was really proud of the way all of the quarterbacks played.  As a group, I feel we only made one or two bad decisions during the whole scrimmage and a couple of bad throws.  I think today was the best day that the quarterbacks have had as a whole since we started camp."
-On going against a good defensive unit: "I feel that our defense is one of the top groups in all areas; defensive line, linebackers and secondary.  Going against them every day in practice helps us a lot and makes us better."

Freshman LB Jamall Hickbottom
-On the first scrimmage: "I think it went alright.  Defensively, we gave up a few big plays, but for myself as a freshman, I think I did really well.  I only had one busted play, but I think I made up for it with some other plays."
-On being on the field and working his way into the rotation: "It's been a great experience.  Coming in as a true freshman, I've just been watching the older guys and learning from them.  When it's my turn to step up, I just have to do what I can do."

Senior WR Malik Stanley
-On how the scrimmage was for the offense: "We were able to make a lot of big plays tonight.  We definitely got better today.  We were able to pick up our tempo and make some big plays.  We still need to work on running the ball a little more, but other than that, I was pleased with our performance today."

Up next: The Jaguars will be off on Sunday, returning to practice at the Jaguar Training Center for a two-hour practice on Monday afternoon.
