One of five newcomers on the roster, true freshman Mahogany Vaught signed with the University of South Alabama women's basketball program last fall. A graduate of Olive Branch High School in Olive Branch, Miss., she helped lead the Conquistadors to a Mississippi Girls' 6A title during her junior season. She sat down with USAJaguars.com to talk about the upcoming season, who she models her game after and why she likes South.

When did you start playing basketball?
I started playing when I was in the second grade. My best friend signed up to play, so I did too. I ended up sticking with it and she didn't.

Take me through your journey to South.
Coach (Terry) Fowler came to my high school to watch a practice and he offered me (a scholarship). I talked to all of the coaches and got close to Coach Fowler. I liked the coaching staff.

How would you describe your playing style?
I'd say it's smooth and laid back. I like to play fast.

What is your biggest strength on the court?
I'm a good dribbler and good at making plays.

What are you working on for this season?
I want to get stronger and work on my jump shot.

What is your favorite thing about playing basketball?
I love everything about it.

Who do you model your game after?
I model my game after LeBron James.
 
What do you like the most about South so far?
I like the atmosphere, staff and girls on the team. It's nothing, but good vibes.
 
What are you most excited about for the upcoming season?
I'm most excited about trying to help the team win a Sun Belt Championship.
