One of five newcomers on the roster, true freshman Jala Buster signed with the University of South Alabama women's basketball program last fall. A graduate of Cypress Ranch High School in Cypress Ranch, Texas, she helped lead the Mustangs to the state finals during her junior season. Buster sat down with USAJaguars.com to talk about when she started playing basketball, why she chose South Alabama and playing with a former rival.
When did you start playing basketball?
I started playing when I was in the eighth grade because my brother was someone I looked up to and he played. I wanted to be just like him.
Take me through your journey to South.
The coaching staff spotted me my senior year and at first I was looking at other schools. They started getting in contact with me more and I liked the coaching staff. They brought me in on a visit and I really liked South.
How would you describe your playing style?
I like to play a fast and fundamental game.
What is your biggest strength on the court?
I'd say getting to the basket.
What are you working on for this season?
I'm working on developing my jumpshot.
What is your favorite thing about playing basketball?
I like putting the ball in the basket.
What is it like being in a recruiting class with Damaya Telemaque, who played on a rival team in high school?
It's cool. We've grown close and I can't wait to play with her.
What do you like the most about South so far?
I like the people because everyone is friendly and nice.
What are your goals for the upcoming season?
My goal is to play and stay healthy coming off my knee injury.
