NEW ORLEANS – University of South Alabama women's basketball's Chyna Ellis was named the Sun Belt Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week (Mar. 5), as announced by the league office on Monday. This marks the first time since 1995-96 that the Jags have taken home four SBC Player of the Week honors in a season and Ellis is only the fourth USA women's basketball player to receive it three-times in a season.
Ellis put together a pair of dominating road performances against Georgia Southern and Georgia State to conclude the regular season. She averaged 18 points, 10.5 rebounds and 3.5 blocks per game in the two victories. Ellis collected her 11th and 12th double-doubles of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds at Georgia Southern and 16 points and 11 rebounds at Georgia State. She also had six blocks at Georgia Southern to tie the most in a game by an opponent at Hanner Fieldhouse, previously set by Gwenda Smith of Marshall on Feb. 27, 1993. Her 20 points at Georgia Southern was her 7th game this season with 20 or more points and she tied her program single-season record of 93 blocks on Saturday at Georgia State.
The Jaguars kickoff the SBC Tournament on Mar. 6 when they play No. 12 ULM at 2 p.m.
