QUOTES
Head Coach Mark Calvi
- On the pitchers against Oklahoma:
"That game against a very good team, I thought Tyler (Carr) was really good. No question that he is much improved from last year. When he is on, he is a legitimate guy; he has a good changeup and slider, and a really good fastball that gets on hitters. I was really pleased with the way Tyler threw the ball today. I thought Zach Melton threw really well, and deserved a better fate. I thought that game should have been over in the ninth inning. I never make excuses for our guys or our team, but that game should have been over in the ninth inning. I can't fault Zach Melton at all for that. I thought he competed and made pitches when he had to; I would have loved to see him make a few more and finish the game, but he competed and did a really nice job. Nick DeSantis was outstanding. His first time back (since injury), and he has bases loaded and strikes a guy out with a 3-2 slider. And (Jared) Proctor was outstanding. I thought we pitched and played really well."
- On the Virginia Tech game:
"We knew that night game was going to be a grind. It was their first game of the day and second of the tournament, and it was our second game of the day and third of the tournament. We knew it was going to be a grind. When we got off to a 2-0 start, I felt pretty good about it. They (Virginia Tech) helped us with a couple of early errors, but I knew it was going to be a tough game. My concern is we didn't get two good starts out of three games. We have gotten two bad starts in my opinion. The bullpen was good; we won it in the second half of the game today. We won the second half in both games, and we won the last six innings against Kansas State. I thought our bullpen did an outstanding. Conner Jednat was good enough today, and Chase Lambert was really good for the second day in a row. I'm really pleased with our effort today. Our guys went really hard. And an emotional, walk-off win against a really good team (Oklahoma) for 12 back-and-forth innings – give our guys credit. We got back to the hotel for 30 minutes, and it was a quick turnaround. But our guys got after it tonight, so I am really pleased with their effort. There are some things that aren't pretty. It's opening weekend and we have made plenty of mistakes; we have done some things that will beat us down the line, but I will take 3-0 right now. We can clean those things up, but I'll take 3-0."
