MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama No. 29 men's tennis team (16-2) shut out USC Upstate (3-7) 7-0 on Wednesday evening at Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts. The Jaguars' extended their win streak to 15 matches, just one short of tying the longest streak in program history.
"It felt good to be back home playing in front of our fans," said South Alabama head coach Nick Brochu. "We were a little flat in doubles. We were passive today. We need to work on that at practice before we head to Florida. We regrouped before singles and made sure that we show a lot of energy and start strong."
South Alabama took the doubles point. USC Upstate won the first match completed as
Francisco Neto and
Ankush Arora beat junior
Oliver Gingras (Quebec City, Quebec, Canada) and sophomore
Lucas Gonzalez (Chateauroux, France) 6-3 on court No. 3. Senior
Pierre Noyon (Oye-Plage, France) and freshman
Loic Cloes (Remicourt, Belgium) defeated
Felix Ewers and
Lenhard Haupt 6-3 on court No. 2, and on court No. 1 seniors
Juan Cruz Soria (San Juan, Argentina) and
Tuki Jacobs (Windhoek, Namibia) clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win over
Fernando Bernardes and
Ignacio Garrido.
Noyon earned the first singles point for the Jags with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Arora on court No. 4. No. 82 Jacobs beat Ewers 6-3, 6-2 on court No. 1, and freshman
Clement Marzol (Toulouse, France) clinched the Jags' victory by beating Haupt 7-6, 6-1 on court No. 2.
Gingras won 6-2, 6-3 on court No. 3 over Bernardes, and Cloes topped Neto 6-3, 6-4 on court No. 5. Gonzalez concluded the match with a three-set win (6-7, 6-4, 10-8) over Garrido on court No. 6.
"The intensity and level of play was much better in singles," said Brochu. "Guys were aggressive and kept the momentum we had from last weekend's tournament. We did well closing three quick matches and putting the pressure on the other team. We will have two big days of practice before we head to a tough road trip in Florida."
The Jags return to the courts at UCF on Sunday at 2:00 p.m., which is the start of a three-game road trip during Spring Break in Florida.
