Q&A WITH MEN'S TENNIS PLAYER SANTIAGO DI LORETO

The University of South Alabama men's tennis program added two newcomers prior to the fall season. One of the two newcomers is freshman Santiago Di Loreto, from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Di Loreto spoke with USAJaguars.com about what got him into tennis, his path to South Alabama and his playing style.

How did you get started in tennis?
I started playing tennis when I was four or five years old because my father also plays tennis. He started me out playing and it took off from there.

Take me on your path to South Alabama.
I played with a program in Atlanta and Coach Brochu came to see me there after I uploaded a video to YouTube and he saw me play. We texted back and forth and he came and saw me play and I committed to play here.

Who do you try and model your game after?
I'm a lefty so I try to model it a little after Rafa (Nadal).

How would you describe your playing style?
I try to hit as many balls as I can with my forehand and I try to hit big serves.

What are you trying to improve about your game to get better?
I am trying to improve my volleys and my backhand.

Who has been the biggest influence on your career as a tennis player?
My dad was the one who got me started, but my first coach was also a big influence. He coached for 10 years and he played a big role in my development.

How is transition moving from home to Alabama?
It's pretty tough being far away from my family, but I know I always have their support.

What have been some difficulties for you during the transition?
I would say the biggest difficulties have been the language and the food. The food is different here. There is more fast food here than at home. I try to stay away from it.
