MOBILE, Ala. –The University of South Alabama women's basketball takes on Texas State this Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The men's teams will be playing afterwards as part of a doubleheader.

The meeting between South Alabama and Texas State will mark the eighth in the all-time series between the two clubs with the Bobcats holding a 6-1 record in the series. The two teams split the season series last year with the road team prevailing for the win in the two games. The Jaguars won 70-56 on March 5th, and the Bobcats won 73-71 on Jan. 14th. Texas State swept the season series in the first two years they played each other as Sun Belt opponents. Four of the six conference games have been decided by four points or less.
Fourth-year South Alabama head coach Terry Fowler and sixth-year Texas State head coach Zenarae Antoine have been the head coaches for all six SBC games. The Bobcats will host the Jags later this month on Thursday, Feb. 23rd at 7:00 p.m.
In its last game South Alabama fell to Texas-Arlington (11-3, 4-0) 73-49 on Thursday night at the Mitchell Center. The Mavericks went on a 14-2 run after Chyna Ellis had to sit out the rest of first half when she picked up her second foul with 2:45 left in the first quarter. After LaNeetra Guillory made a layup Texas-Arlington went on another run, this time a 12-2 run. Texas-Arlington cemented its victory by outscoring South Alabama 24-15 in the third quarter. The Jaguars were able to cut their deficit to 12 points halfway through the quarter. The Mavericks responded with a 14-2 run, scoring in five of their next six possessions.
Texas-Arlington outscored South Alabama 32-16 in points in the paint and 18-7 in second chance points with a 39-26 rebounding advantage. Despite having just one less one turnover (20-19), the Mavericks also outscored the Jags 33-14 in points off turnovers. The Mavericks shot 50.9% (29-57) from the field and 76.9% (10-13) from three while the Jags were just 39.1% (18-46) from the field and 33.3% (5-15) from three.
Ellis set a new season-high in points with a game-high 17, going 5-10 from the field with four rebounds, a team-high three steals and a game-high four blocks. With her four rejections she passed passed Adrian Vickers (1987-90) for third place in the program's all-time career blocked shots leaders. She needs just three more blocks to have sole possession of second place over Genevieve Delt (2002-05).
Texas State (6-9, 1-3) enters the game with a three-game losing streak, losing to Troy on the road 65-54 loss at Troy on Thursday, 61-39 to Texas-Arlington last Saturday and Appalachian State 66-64 on New Years' Eve. The Bobcats are 3-7 in their last 10 games and 2-5 on the road with the only Sun Belt victory this year coming at home against Coastal Carolina (83-62). The Bobcats were picked to finish sixth in the preseason coaches' poll with 81 points.
Texas State leads the Sun Belt with a 3-point field goal percentage defense of 21.9 through four conference games. The Bobcats have conceded only 14 3-pointers through four league games. The Bobcats defense at the arc limited Coastal Carolina to 2 of 13, Appalachian State to 1 of 8, UTA to 3 of 12 and Troy to 8 of 31 efforts from deep. The Bobcats' top statistical categories are its 13.6 assist per game and 30.7 3-point shooting percentage, which both rank third among member institutions. Junior guard Taeler Deer leads the team in three-point field goal percentage (55.2%), assists (38), steals (26) and scoring (8.9).
Texas State's bench has showcased its scoring ability this season, averaging 27.1 points per game, including four 30-plus point performances and games of 43 and 50 points. Over the past five games the bench is averaging 32.6 points per game, while opponents' benches are managing only 10.6. During the five-game span sophomore guard Toshua Leavitt and redshirt-junior forward Amber Jones are co-leading the bench personnel at 8.8 and 8.6 points per outing, respectively, while junior guard Kaitlin Walla is averaging 7.2 per game and redshirt-senior guard Erin Peoples 5.4.
