MOBILE, Ala. – The 22nd-ranked University of South Alabama baseball team will play its final midweek games of the season when it hosts Jacksonville State this week at Stanky Field.
USA (33-12) and JSU (28-15) will square off on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., followed by a 3 p.m. contest on Wednesday. Both games will be streamed live on JagNationTV.com, and will also be broadcast on 99.5 FM The Jag in Mobile and the iHeartRadio app. Live stats for every Jaguar game are available at USAJaguars.com, and in-game updates are provided through the South Alabama baseball Twitter account (SouthALBaseball).
Jaguar right-hander Randy Bell (4-1) will make his seventh start of the season in Tuesday's contest. Bell tossed a complete game at Auburn in his last outing and tied a career-high with seven strikeouts. In his last four starts, Bell is 4-0 with a 2.65 ERA and has recorded 28 strikeouts against eight walks during that 34-inning span. Jacksonville State will counter with left-hander Derrick Adams (3-2), who will make his fourth start of the year and enters the game with 14 strikeouts and 14 walks and a 9.16 ERA in 18 2/3 innings.
South Alabama will send right-hander Ryne Long (2-0) to the mound for his third start of the season in Wednesday's game. In nine total appearances, Long has recorded one save, 17 strikeouts and issued four walks while posting a 2.76 ERA in 29 1/3 innings. The Gamecocks have not announced a starter for Wednesday's contest.
The Jaguars enter Tuesday's contest having won five of their last six games after going 3-1 last week following a midweek win at Auburn and a pair of Sun Belt Conference wins at Georgia State last weekend. USA leads the SBC in walks (244), runs scored (296), stolen bases (80) and sacrifice flies (26), and ranks second in on-base percentage.
The Jaguar pitching staff leads the league in ERA (3.32) and earned runs allowed (149), and ranks second in fewest runs allowed (175). USA is third in the conference in opposing batting average (.236) and hits allowed (350).
Right-hander Kevin Hill leads the Sun Belt in strikeouts (97) — which ranks fourth nationally — and innings pitched (87.2), and is tied for the league lead in wins (8). Left-handed reliever Shane McKinley ranks tied for fourth in the league in saves (6). Left-handed reliever James Traylor ranks tied for sixth in the SBC in wins (5).
 Drew LaBounty leads the SBC and ranks 17th nationally in walks (39). LaBounty ranks second in the league in sacrifice flies (6), which ranks ninth nationally, and on-base percentage (.470), fourth in stolen bases (11), tied for sixth in runs scored (36), tied for seventh in RBI (35) and tied for eighth in batting average (.333).
Center fielder Cole Billingsley leads the SBC and ranks 12th nationally in stolen bases (25). Billingsley also leads the league in sacrifice flies (7), which ranks fifth nationally. Billingsley carries an eight-game hitting streak into Tuesday's contest.Â
Right fielder Travis Swaggerty ranks second in the conference in walks (34) and stolen bases (13), third in on-base percentage (.447) and tied for sixth in runs scored (36). Swaggerty carries a 28-game on-base streak into Tuesday's game. Danny Martinez ranks fifth in the league in RBI (38) and seventh in walks (28). Catcher Jared Barnes ranks sixth in the SBC in slugging percentage (.538) and tied for eight in home runs (6).
JSU won two of three games at Belmont last weekend in Nashville, Tenn., including a 26-11 win on Saturday in which the Gamecocks pounded out a school-record 30 hits. Jacksonville State is hitting .310 as a team, and is led by Clayton Daniel who leads the team in batting average (.378), hits (71), doubles (14), RBI (43), total bases (92) and on-base percentage (.434). The JSU pitching staff carries a 5.26 team ERA into the two-game set.
South Alabama holds an 18-5 all-time lead over Jacksonville State in a series that dates back to 1996 ... The schools split a pair of games at JSU last season ... The Jags have won four of the last five contests in the series dating back to 2013.
