MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama baseball team will square off with No. 20 Mississippi State Tuesday when it travels to Starkville, Miss., for a 6:30 p.m. contest at Dudy Noble Field at Polk-DeMent Stadium.
The game will be broadcast live by SEC Network+, and accessed via WatchESPN. USA right-hander Hunter Soleymani (1-0) is scheduled to make his third start of the season. MSU will send freshman left-hander Kale Breaux (0-1) to the mound in his first career start. Soleymani struck out four in 6 2/3 innings to earn his first win of the season in his start last week against Southern Mississippi. Breaux carries an 8.10 ERA into the game, along with one save, three strikeouts and three walks in 3 1/3 innings pitched while also combining for a shutout.
USA (9-3) dropped two of three games to Middle Tennessee over the weekend at Stanky Field after taking a pair of midweek games over Southern Mississippi. MSU (8-3-1) defeated Southern California, tied Oklahoma and fell to UCLA last weekend in Los Angeles, and are ranked 20th by D1Baseball.com this week. The Bulldogs are also ranked 23rd in the ESPN/
USA Today Coaches Poll and 24th by
Baseball America. Mississippi State is 7-2 at home this season, while the Jags are 1-0 after defeating Georgia in Athens, Ga., on Feb. 26.
South Alabama leads the Sun Belt Conference and ranks fifth nationally in walks (71). The Jags are third in the league in on-base percentage (.391), tied for fourth in RBI (72) and home runs (8), fifth in runs scored (78), sixth in batting average (.268) and hits (106) and seventh in slugging percentage (.376).
The Jaguar pitching staff ranks second in the conference in fewest walks allowed (31), tied for third in saves (3), fourth in opposing batting average (.247), fifth in ERA (3.21), tied for fifth in hits allowed (101) and seventh in strikeouts (90).
Defensively, USA ranks second in the Sun Belt Conference with a .985 fielding percentage - which also ranks tied for 11th nationally - and has committed the second-fewest errors (7) in the league.
Center fielder Cole Billingsley enters the week tied for the SBC lead in sacrifice flies (3), which ranks tied for fifth nationally. Jared Barnes is tied for second in the league in sacrifice bunts (4), which is tied for seventh nationally.
Tuesday's game will mark USA's final contest before opening conference play against Little Rock this weekend in Little Rock, Ark.
