MOBILE, Ala. – University of South Alabama softball travels to Hattiesburg on Wednesday for a non-conference midweek clash with Southern Miss at 6 p.m.

USA (10-10) was swept in a Sun Belt Conference doubleheader last Sunday at No. 5 Louisiana-Lafayette and enters the midweek on a four-game losing streak for the first time since the 2011 season. The Jaguars took leads in both contests versus the Ragin' Cajuns, but failed to apply the finishing touches and now sit at the bottom of the league table.
The Jags return to SBC action this weekend when they host Louisiana-Monroe for a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday.
Southern Miss (14-13) has split its last four games after being swept in three by ULL on March 5-6 by a combined score of 36-3. The Golden Eagles fell, 3-2, to Middle Tennessee in the rubber match of the teams' Conference USA-opening series in Murfreesboro last weekend.
USM is 6-4 at home this year, while USA is winless in four road games.
South Alabama is batting .277 as a team, led by senior third baseman Emily Messer, who is hitting at a .528 clip, 10
th-best in the country. Messer has 38 hits in 20 games with 21 runs scored, a .639 slugging percentage and a .563 on-base percentage. The Mobile, Ala., native has also stolen 10 bases in 13 attempts this year.
Sophomore right-hander Devin Brown struck out 10 ULL batters last Sunday, the most dealt to the Ragin' Cajuns all season. Brown has struck out 118 batters total, the sixth-most in the NCAA, and has fanned 10 or more batters in 14 appearances, making for an 11.4 strikeouts-per-seven-innings ratio, second-best in the nation.
Southern Miss is batting .302 overall, led by Rachel Johnson's .360. Johnson has scored a team-high 18 runs and boasts a .492 on-base percentage. Samantha Robles is 8-6 in the circle with a team-low 3.45 ERA and 60 strikeouts in 99 1/3 innings pitched.
USA defeated Southern Miss, 10-2, in six innings on Feb. 21 at the Mardi Gras Invitational, led by Messer, who set a new Jaguar game record with five hits.
