LAFAYETTE, La. – University of South Alabama men's tennis senior Tuki Jacobs (Windhoek, Namibia) and freshman Clement Marzol (Toulouse, France) each won their respective flights Saturday at the Battle on the Bayou hosted by Louisiana-Lafayette.
The Jaguars put together a 6-2 record in singles, and added two more victories in doubles. Jacobs and Marzol also advanced to the finals of the doubles bracket.
Jacobs won his matches – both against opponents from UL Lafayette – in straight sets. He defeated Vlad Kramarov 7-5, 6-3 in the semifinals, and Coleman Wahlborg 6-3, 6-2.
Marzol, competing in Flight 2, also won his two contests in straight sets, downing Federico Staksrud of New Orleans 7-6, 6-0, and Jamie Fraser of ULL 6-1, 6-2.
"In singles, Tuki and Clement really showed why they were the No. 1 seed of their respective draw," USA head coach Nick Brochu said. "Tuki didn't drop a set today. His forehand was super solid and hit winners all over the courts. Clement's rally speed was too much for his opponents dropping only 13 games in three matches. That is incredible coming from a freshman."
Senior Juan Cruz Soria (San Juan, Argentina) dropped his semifinal match, 2-6, 6-4, (10-8), to Wahlborg, but rebounded to defeat Kramarov 6-3, 6-2 in the consolation match.
"Even though Juan Cruz had a disappointing semifinals, he pulled it back together and won his last match for a 3rd-place finish," Brochu said.
Junior Olivier Gingras (Quebec City, Quebec, Canada) reached the consolation finals after a 6-2, 6-3 victory over UNO's Giacomo Adoncecchi, but fell 7-5, 6-2 to Jeffrey Hsu of New Orleans.
Jacobs and Marzol reached the doubles final after defeating the ULL team of Wahlborg and Eric Perez 6-3, then fell 6-3 to the Cajuns' Pearse Dolan and Kramarov.
Soria and Gingras split a pair of matches in the consolation bracket, winning 6-1 over Silvia Cocito and Jamie Fraser of UL Lafayette, and losing 6-3 against Wen-Po Tseng and Teeradon Torttrakul
"Our doubles level of play was better than yesterday," Brochu said. "That was good to see."
Next week, the Jaguars will compete in the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships in Auburn, Ala.
