MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama men's tennis team is traveling to Auburn to compete in the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships this weekend.
For the Jaguars, seniors
Tuki Jacobs (Windhoek, Namibia),
Juan Cruz Soria (San Juan, Argentina), and
Pierre Noyon (Oye-Plage, France), sophomore
Lucas Gonzalez (Chateauroux, France), and freshman
Clement Marzol (Toulouse, France) will compete Friday through Monday against schools from Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana.
"We are looking forward to competing against the best players in our region from schools like LSU, Alabama, Auburn, Ole Miss and Mississippi State," said USA head coach
Nick Brochu. "It's very important to take a look at them, and if we have a chance to play them, we'll try to get a win, so when we play them again in the spring, we'll have that mental edge."
At last weekend's Battle on the Bayou, Jacobs and Marzol claimed flight titles. Jacobs dropped four opponents - three in straight sets - including Louisiana-Lafayette's Coleman Wahlborg 6-3, 6-2 in the finals. Marzol won all three of his matches in straight sets, ending with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Jamie Fraser of ULL. Soria got third place in his flight after defeating UL Lafayette's Vlad Kramarov 6-3, 6-2.
On the season, Marzol has gone undefeated in singles, posting a record of 6-0. After starting 1-1 in singles, Jacobs is on a four-match win streak to improve to 5-1, and Soria is 4-2.
"So far we've had a good fall, but the goal is to keep improving every week, and this weekend will be a good test," Brochu said.
