MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama baseball team will host Appalachian State in a three-game Sun Belt Conference series this weekend at Stanky Field.
The series will kick off with game one at 6:30 p.m. Friday, followed by game two Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Sunday's series finale is set for a noon first pitch.
All three games will be streamed live and available for purchase through JagNationTV.com. Each game will also be broadcast live on WNTM 710 AM in Mobile, and can also be accessed via the iHeartRadio app. Live stats for each game will also be available through the multimedia section of USAJaguars.com, while in-game updates will be provided at Twitter.com/SouthALBaseball.
USA right-hander Kevin Hill (4-0) will make his sixth start of the season in the series opener, while ASU will counter with right-hander Taylor Thurber (3-6). Right-hander Austin Bembnowski (2-3) will get the start for the Jags in game two, while Mountaineer left-hander Jeffrey Springs (2-1) will start for ASU. USA southpaw Jared Gates (2-1) will make his eighth start of the season in the series finale, while ASU will send right-hander Travis Holden (0-2) to the mound.
South Alabama (22-12, 9-6 SBC) enters the weekend leading the Sun Belt Conference in batting average (.288), on-base percentage (.387), hits (336) and walks (156), and the Jaguar pitching staff leads the league in strikeouts (255). The Jags are second in the SBC in ERA (3.47) and fielding percentage (.972).
USA has won three consecutive SBC series after taking two of three games from Arkansas State last weekend in Jonesboro, Ark., and will begin play this weekend tied with Georgia Southern for third in the league standings.
Cole Billingsley carries a team-best nine-game hitting streak into the weekend, while Garrett DeGallier has hit safely in five straight games. Adam Ballew carries a four-game hitting streak into the series opener, and is tied for the conference lead with five sacrifice flies.
Appalachian State (10-24, 3-12 SBC) enters the weekend in last place in the SBC standings, and is 3-7 in its last 10 games after dropping three of its last four including two of three against Troy last weekend in Boone, N.C. The Mountaineers are tied for the SBC lead in home runs (27) with Georgia Southern, and are led by Dillon Dobson who ranks third in the league in home runs (8), and is tied for fourth with Jaguar third baseman Bud Collura in runs scored with 27.
ASU ranks last in the league in ERA (4.80), and have issued the second-highest number of walks (134). The Mountaineers also rank last in the SBC with a .959 fielding percentage.
Appalachian State holds a 1-0 all-time lead over South Alabama. The lone meeting between the schools came in a 2-1 ASU win over USA which eliminated the Jaguars from the NCAA District 3 Regional in Starkville, Miss., in 1973.
