MOBILE, Ala. – University of South Alabama sophomore
Tuki Jacobs (Windhoek, Namibia) picked up two points on the day to lead the men's tennis team to a 6-1 victory over Southern Illinois Tuesday at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.
Rebounding from a 1-1 week on the road, the 60th-ranked Jaguars improved to an 8-4 overall mark in the spring campaign. The Salukis dropped to 3-8.
"This win feels really good, especially for some guys who have been struggling over the last two weeks," said USA head coach
Nick Brochu. "Some guys had some tough losses against Troy and North Florida, so it's good to get back on the right side with a win today. It doesn't matter what position what you play, to get a win feels good."
Jacobs earned his eighth win of the season and clinched the match for USA with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over
Daniel Martinez at No. 4. He paired up with freshmen
Olivier Gingras (Quebec City, Quebec, Canada) to put the Jags on the board in doubles when they defeated Martinez and
Ransom Braaten 6-1 on the No. 3 court.
Following Jacobs and Gingras' lead, juniors
Tim Srkala (Brno, Czech Republic) and
Juan Troglia (Mendoza, Argentina) secured the doubles point with a 6-4 win over
Jonny Rigby and
Szymon Opieczonek at No. 2.
In singles action, Rigby tied the match at 1-1 and claimed the lone point for SIU when he defeated Srkala 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 1 spot. Gingras responded with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over
Peter Molloy in the No. 6 flight. Troglia stretched the Jags' lead to 3-1 when he dropped Opieczonek 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 5 position.
After Jacobs' win, senior
Daniel Leitner (Niederfischbach, Germany), ranked No. 75 in the nation, picked up his ninth-straight victory when he downed
Michal Kianicka at No. 2. Junior
Gerhard Gruindelingh (Pretoria, South Africa) rounded out the day for USA when he outlasted
Alex Pozo 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), (10-6) in the No. 3 flight.
"It's nice to win a match like today when our top guy was off, but the back of the lineup really stepped up," said Brochu. "It's great to see that we have support from all six positions.
"Overall, I think the guys know there a lot of work left through the season against some really tough teams," said Brochu. "It's going to be a tough season and a tough Sun Belt Conference tournament, but the guys really feel that we can win at every position."
The Jaguars are back in action this weekend as they travel to Texas to face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Sat.) and Texas-San Antonio (Sun.).
