South Alabama comes into the game against the Blazers after breaking for finals. The Jaguars fell 71-51 in their last outing at Southern Mississippi on Dec. 6.
Colby Davis and Juliann Miller led the way offensively for USA in the loss as they each had 16 points. The 16-point outing was a new career best for Miller, while the redshirt senior guard also pulled down a career-high eight rebounds.
With their most recent performances, Davis and Miller are averaging 7.8 and 6.3 points per game, respecitvely, which ranks third and fourth on the Jaguar roster. Davis is knocking down 51.7 percent of her shot attempts, while Miller is 15-of-30 from the floor for 50 percent.
USA has been hit hard recently with injuries as three players have missed all or parts of the last four games. Leading scorer Marquita Daniels (10.3 ppg) has missed each of the last two outings, while senior forward Taylor Jenkins (7.5 rpg) has missed four and D'Andra Pringle has missed three.
Beginning Sunday against the Blazers, the Jaguars are adding one more player to the roster as Jennifer Towne, who began the season as a graduate assistant coach, will switch roles and move into the playing rotation. Towne graduated in three years at North Alabama and has one year of eligibility remaining.
The Jonesboro, Ark., native ended her career ranked 15th on the Lions' all-time scoring list, finishing just shy of the 1,000-point mark, recording 992 point. She also pulled down 356 rebounds during that same time. During her career, she started all 84 games in which she played.
Redshirt freshman Genesis Perrymond sits just outside double figures with 9.0 ppg. Perrymond leads South Alabama with nine three-pointers on the year and also paces the club with 13 assists and 13 steals.
In the post, Chyna Ellis ranks among the conference leaders in rebounding and blocks. Ellis' 7.8 boards per contest are third-most in the SBC and her 2.0 blocks per game are second, just 0.1 behind ULM's Alayshia Hunter.
True freshman India Hall is coming off her best outing of the season as she had nine points, three rebounds and a block in 25 minutes of action against the Golden Eagles.
As a team, South Alabama ranks second in the league in field-goal percentage defense, holding opponents to just 36.9 perent shooting. The Jaguars also lead the conference in blocks (5.3).
Like the Jaguars, UAB (4-4) also enters action this week after a long layoff. The Blazers' last game action came back on Dec. 5, an 80-33 win over Mississippi Valley State.
UAB placed four players in double figures in that contest, led by Chelsee Black, Deanna Kuzmanic and Bianca Dufelmeier, who each had 13 points apiece. The Blazers shot 47 percent from the floor and held MVSU to just 25.9 percent shooting, while also recording nine blocks and forcing 21 turnovers.
"UAB has great guard play," South Alabama head coach Terry Fowler said. "Chelsee Black is very athletic and then they also have two great shooters out on the wing with her. They present some problems for their opponents in the fact that you have to go out and guard them on the perimeter. They also do an outstanding job in the post as well.
"For us, their athleticism is going to present some challenges for us. We've got to make sure that we execute the scout and are in the positions (defensively) that we need to be in to counter their athleticism."
Black and Kuzmanic enter the contest averaging double figures. Black is averaging 11.6 ppg, while Kuzmanic is right behind her with 11.5 ppg. Kuzmanic has been solid from beyond the three-point line as she leads the Blazers with 20 treys this season, connecting on 34.5 percent of her long-range attempts.
Dufelmeier, as well as Black, have 12 three-pointers this season and tops UAB with a 41.4 percent three-point field-goal percentage.
Keonna Farmer, a transfer from Auburn, is coming off a near double-double performance as she had nine points and 12 rebounds in her last outing. Farmer is averaging 9.9 ppg and 7.4 rpg.
Senior forward Brittany Winborne leads the club on the glass with 8.5 boards per game, to go along with her 8.6 ppg.
As a team, UAB is shooting 41.4 percent from the floor and 32.9 percent from the arc. The Blazers are also averaging 43.1 rebounds per game, 10.5 more than their opponents.
UAB is looking for its win on an opponent's home floor this season as it is 0-3 in that category thus far.
