THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The University of South Alabama men's tennis team had both doubles pairs advance to the finals on Sunday at the Thomasville Collegiate Invitational.
The Jaguars picked up three doubles victories, including the finals win by junior
Gerhard Gruindelingh (Pretoria, South Africa) and freshman
Olivier Gingras (Quebec, Canada), and one singles win on the final day of the tournament.
Gruindelingh and Gingras topped teammates senior
Manuel Belda (Posadas, Misiones, Argentina) and sophomore
Quincy Olij (Alkmaar, Netherlands) 8-4.
"It's always special to play against teammates, but they really put that aside and played some solid doubles," said USA assistant coach
Romain Bocaert. "I was impressed by Olivier's performance. He rapidly adapted his game and showed his doubles skills."
Belda and Olij defeated
Douglas Boe and
Juan Pablo Boada of West Florida 8-5 in the semifinals, while Gruindelingh and Gingras edged
Kenny Brasil and
Alex Peyrot of UWF 9-8.
"The guys played really good doubles in the semifinals against the two teams from West Florida," said Bocaert.
Olij was the lone Jaguar to post a singles win. He won the finals of the B singles consolation draw with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Boada.
Gruindelingh fell 6-4, 6-4 to
Edward Nguyen of Valdosta State in the finals of the A singles consolation draw.
"Gerhard had opportunities, but he didn't get the win mainly because of his shot selection on important points," said Bocaert. "He played at a high level all weekend though. Overall, we had a great tournament and I look forward to Southern Miss next week and for the guys to carry on this weekend's good effort."
South Alabama is back in action Sept. 12-13 in Hattiesburg, Miss. for the Southern Miss Invitational.
