HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Four members of the University of South Alabama men's tennis team went unbeaten on the second day of the Southern Miss Invitational Saturday.
Senior
Daniel Leitner (Niederfischbach, Germany), juniors
Juan Troglia (Mendoza, Argentina) and
Gerhard Gruindelingh (Pretoria, South Africa) and freshman
Olivier Gingras (Quebec City, Quebec, Canada) each went 3-0 on the day.
South Alabama claimed 10 wins, including five singles over Southern Miss and five doubles matches against Alabama State and UAB.
"Today was another long day, but the Jags did really well," said USA head coach
Nick Brochu. "I am very proud of the guys. It was really great to see them pulling out big wins, even when they were tired and dehydrated at the end of a long tournament."
Leitner dropped
Chao-Yu Huang 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot, while Gruindelingh edged
Wen-Po Tseng 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 2. Leitner and Gruindelingh teamed up to defeat
Ronald Mataba and
Adam Coyne of ASU 8-5 and
Mitchell Martell and
Christian Coetzee of UAB 8-5 in the No. 1 flight.
The Jaguar duo of Troglia and Gingras downed
Karlo Skorkv and
Stefan Vojnic of ASU 8-2 and
Luiz Felipe Pinto and
Henry Paiste of UAB 8-4 on the No. 3 court. Troglia picked up a 5-7, 6-2, (10-8) victory over
Mikhal Esipov at No. 5 and Gingras won 6-2, 6-3 against
Tarun Surat in the No. 4 position.
Senior
Manuel Belda (Posadas, Misiones, Argentina) edged
Alex Doleac 6-2, 5-7, (10-6) at the No. 3 spot and added another Jaguar win with sophomore
Quincy Olij (Alkmaar, Netherlands) when they defeated
Takura Mlambo and
Jarred Thompson 8-4 at No. 3.
"We showed great character today," said Brochu. "It was a great weekend for the Jags in preparation for our tougher fall tournaments coming up soon."
USA is back in action Sept. 26-28 in Tuscaloosa, Ala. for the Crimson Tide Four-in-the-Fall tournament.
