Wednesday's contest marks South Alabama's final non-conference matchup. The Jaguars have accrued a 23-4 non-conference record in 2014, and USA is 3-1 versus SEC opponents this year with wins over LSU, Georgia and Mississippi State.
Only five regular season contests remain for the Jaguars after Wednesday's bout with the Tigers: a three-game, Sun Belt Conference series at Western Kentucky next weekend and a doubleheader versus Troy at Jaguar Field on May 3.
USA (34-9, 11-5 SBC) needed Stephanie Pilkington's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning last Saturday to clinch its SBC series over Georgia State, moving the Jaguars ahead of WKU to second in league standings behind No. 16 Louisiana-Lafayette.
After South Alabama defeated Georgia State, 8-0, in run-rule fashion in game one on Friday, the Panthers stormed back to take game two, 2-1, in a contest marred by a series of illegal pitches called on USA starter Farish Beard, which plated both of GSU's runs in the top of the first inning.
The Panthers opened scoring in game three with a run gifted by a Jaguar fielding error in the top of the sixth, but USA tied the contest in the bottom half, sending the tilt into extras. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Amanda Minahan drew a one-out walk and Pilkington scored her on a two-out single to left center, helping USA improve its home to record to 15-1.
Pilkington leads USA at the plate with a .340 batting average on a team-leading 48 hits. The sophomore scored and drove in both South Alabama runs in the defeat of LSU earlier this season.
Minahan opened last weekend's series with a three-RBI performance in game one; the freshman is now runner-up on the club in batting average, entering Wednesday's contest batting at a .298 clip and boasting a .500 slugging percentage.
Kaitlyn Griffith is third on the club in batting average (.288), while ranking eighth in the nation in hit by pitch per game (0.49), a statistic which complements her team-leading on-base percentage of .441.
For the sixth week in a row, the Jaguar pitching staff leads the nation in ERA after lowering its overall ratio to 1.12, attributed to USA's outscoring of Georgia State last weekend, 11-3.
Hannah Campbell is fourth in the NCAA in ERA (0.84) and sixth in walks allowed per seven innings (0.79), while counterpart Beard is seventh in ERA (0.99) and third in hits allowed per seven innings (3.02).
Campbell is also ninth in the country in saves (4), and Beard is 11
th in strikeouts per seven innings (9.6).
The Tigers have won five of their last seven contests and most recently clinched a Southeastern Conference series at South Carolina, winning two out of three to move to 8-10 in SEC play, good for seventh overall.
LSU is 16-10 at home this season.
A.J. Andrews leads LSU at the plate with a .333 batting average on 52-of-156 hitting, topping the club's hits list as well. Sahvanna Jaquish leads the team in RBI (34), home runs (10) and slugging percentage (.583). Andrews and Allison Falcon are tied for 19th in the NCAA in triples with four apiece. The Tigers lead the SEC in the category with 15 total, while the LSU pitching staff has allowed no three-baggers all year.
Baylee Corbello is 13-7 in the circle with a 2.93 ERA and 142 strikeouts in 141 inning pitched. Corbello has recorded five shutouts this year and given up 59 earned runs on 106 hits to 109 walks.
Ashley Czechner is 9-11 with a 3.82 ERA and 86 strikeouts in 121 inning pitched. Czechner has allowed 66 earned runs on 137 hits to 61 walks.
