ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of South Alabama men's tennis team finished up play Saturday at the USTA Collegiate Clay Court Invitational with a singles victory from sophomore
Tuki Jacobs (Windhoek, Namibia) at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World.
The Jaguars went 1-3 on the day with Jacobs' 6-4, 6-2 win over
Laurynas Antropikas of Stetson accounting for the lone highlight.
"Overall, it was a tough weekend for us," USA head coach
Nick Brochu said. "We lost many deciding points, much more than usual. We have been very strong in this area this fall, but we fell short this weekend. Going into the offseason, we have two months to work on being sharper on big points
"We fought hard today again but lost two matches in the super tiebreaker. Tuki was able to pull out a good win even when fighting a shoulder injury."
Senior
Manuel Belda (Posadas, Misiones, Argentina) and junior
Juan Troglia (Mendoza, Argentina) both extended their opponents to a third set before ultimately falling short. Belda rallied from a first-set loss before dropping a 7-5, 5-7, (10-6) decision to
George Cartledge of Virginia Tech, and Clemson's
Richard Pham came back from an early deficit to win 4-6, 6-2, (10-2) over Troglia.
Freshman
Olivier Gingras (Quebec City, Quebec, Canada) lost 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) to
Reece Acree of Central Florida.
The Jaguars have completed their fall season and will return to action in 2015.
