JANSEN POSTS JAGUARS' LOW SCORE ON FIRST DAY OF LSU EVENT

BATON ROUGE, La. – Daniel Jansen carded a 1-over-par 73 in the second of two rounds Saturday at the David Toms Intercollegiate, the low 18-hole total of the day for the University of South Alabama men's golf team.

The junior — one of two Jaguars competing as an individual in the event — had a 77 in the morning and with a 150 total ended the day in a tie for seventh place in the individual standings.  Jansen had a pair of birdies on the front nine at the par-72, 7,663-yard University Club in the second round, posting a four at the 673-yard third before adding a three on No. 7, which was playing at 471 yards.

Michael Garretson is tied for 16th after a 152 two-round total that included a 75, the lowest score by a Jag over the first 18 holes, in the morning.  The senior's lone birdie in the first round came on the 484-yard 10th hole, while in the afternoon Garretson carded birdies on a pair of par fives, Nos. 3 and 17.

Matt Sheehan recorded six birdies in the two rounds — including four over the second 18 holes — to finish with 158 total; he'll enter the final day tied for 41st place in the individual standings.  In addition to firing fours on both par fives on the course's back nine, Nos. 11 and 17, the sophomore had threes on the opening hole of each nine.

Tyler Klava is tied for 43rd one shot behind Sheehan, with Ally Purdy two strokes in back of the senior in a tie for 50th.  Jason Mendel — also competing as an individual — recorded a 164 36-hole total and is in a tie for 60th place, while Ryan Pope improved his score by 11 shots in the afternoon round and stands 66th.

Host Louisiana State is tied with Southeastern Louisiana atop the team leaderboard after the second round, with both posting a 596 36-hole total.  Winthrop stands third 15 shots behind the leaders, with Mercer and Louisiana-Lafayette completing the top five at the end of the opening day; the Jags are seven strokes in back of the Ragin' Cajuns.

The Tigers' Benjamin Taylor fired a 3-under-par 69 in the second round, taking a three-shot lead in the individual standings over teammate Zach Wright with a 1-under-par 143 total.

Final-round action will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday.  USA will open on Nos. 13-17 and is slated to play with Rice and Southern Mississippi.
