AUBURN, Ala. – Sophomore
Tuki Jacobs (Windhoek, Namibia) earned two singles wins for the University of South Alabama men's tennis team to go undefeated on the third day of the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships Saturday.
Jacobs, seeded 17-32, dropped
Tam Trinh of LSU 6-4, (ret.) in the third round and followed up with a 6-1, 6-3 win over
Giovani Samaha of Troy.
"Tuki led the way for the Jags with two wins today," said USA head coach
Nick Brochu. "He was very aggressive and it paid off."
In other singles action, senior
Manuel Belda (Posadas, Misiones, Argentina) fell 7-6, 6-4 to
Chi-Shan Jao of Tulane.
Mitchell Martell of UAB defeated junior
Gerhard Gruindelingh (Pretoria, South Africa) 6-2, 6-4, and freshman
Olivier Gingras (Quebec City, Quebec, Canada) lost 6-1, 6-3 to
Sean Donohue of Alabama.
"The matches were harder today, and we were slowed down by a few injuries," said Brochu. "We competed well and finished the tournament on a good note."
Gruindelingh and senior
Daniel Leitner (Niederfischbach, Germany) bowed out of doubles play with an 8-4 loss to Trinh and
Eric Perez of LSU.
"Overall, the guys had a great tournament," said Brochu. "We competed well and showed that South Alabama is among the top programs in the Southern Region. We know what we need to work on before our last tournament of the fall."
