ATLANTA – Daniel Leitner, Shayann Vaezzadeh and Tuki Jacobs went undefeated to lead the University of South Alabama men's tennis team to a 9-5 record on day two at the Georgia State Fall Invitational Sunday.
The Jaguars finished with an 18-12 mark overall. Leitner (Niederfischbach, Germany), Vaezzadeh (Bavent, France) and Jacobs (Windhoek, Namibia) each posted a 3-0 record in singles for the weekend.
"Today was a great day for us," said USA head coach Nick Brochu. "Playing two matches back to back starting at 7 a.m. is not easy. Our guys responded well and competed until the end. Winning all six singles matches against Georgia State was an awesome feeling. They are our new conference rivals and getting the mental edge today was important."
Leitner edged Rayane Djouad of Georgia Southern 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) and topped Thomas Cook of Georgia State 6-1, 7-6 (7-3). Jacobs downed Marco Osorio of Georgia Southern 6-0, 6-1 and defeated Eric Baum of Georgia State 6-1, 6-0. Vaezzadeh won 7-5, 6-1 over Nico DeGroof of Georgia Southern and outlasted Sofiane Chevallier of Georgia State 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.
"Daniel, Tuki and Shayann all went undefeated this weekend," said Brochu. "These guys have been practicing very hard and it paid off. I'm very proud of our results today."
In other singles action, sophomore Gerhard Gruindelingh (Pretoria, South Africa) picked up a straight sets win over Jannis Koeke of Georgia State 6-4, 6-3. Junior Manuel Belda (Posadas, Misiones, Argentina) topped Robert Schulze of Georgia State 6-4, 6-3.
Sophomore Juan Troglia (Mendoza, Argentina) fell 2-6, 6-3, (10-6) to Albert Codina Sala of Georgia Southern, but rebounded with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Chinmay Handa of Georgia State.
The Jaguars will be back in action Oct. 10 when they head to Tuscaloosa, Ala. for the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships.
