MOBILE, Ala.
 — Down 2-0 to No. 19 Florida State in the bottom of the seventh inning, No. 15 University of South Alabama softball rallied to cut the deficit in half, but could not capitalize with runners in scoring position, as the Jaguars fell 2-1 to the Seminoles on Saturday at the 2013 Mobile Regional.

FSU (43-16) ace Lacey Waldrop (24-8) struck out her 10th batter of the game to secure the visitor win and send USA to the loser’s bracket, pitting the Jags against the winner of Mississippi State and Mississippi Valley State for a finals play-in game at 6 p.m. on Saturday.

The loss, sustained by USA’s Hannah Campbell (22-8), is South Alabama’s first in 18 games, as the Jaguars fall to 46-8 on the year.

FSU's Maddie O'Brien accounted for both Seminole runs, delivering a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth and driving in pinch-runner Courtney Adams two innings later. Facing two outs in the bottom of the seventh, USA's Britany Campbell followed an Emily Messer single with one of her own to drive Meghan Collins home, but Waldrop shut the door with a game-ending strikeout.

“I thought Waldrop did a great job,” said USA head coach Becky Clark. “She’s got a ton of movement. She’s tough on righties, and she’s got the off-speed stuff that floats away from them. I thought that was the difference. They had their opportunities, and they made the most of them. We didn’t make the most of ours.

“We’re going to find out what we’re made of [in the play-in game],” she continued. “When you’ve had the kind of season that we’ve had, you don’t let one loss get you down. These kids will bounce back. They love what they’re doing, they take a lot of pride in it. I expect them to bounce back at 6 o’clock [versus Mississippi State/Mississippi Valley State winner].”

At the 2012 Tuscaloosa Regional, USA fell to host-Alabama, but responded with a 10-1, run-rule victory over Georgia Tech to reach the final. All games throughout the weekend can be viewed on ESPN3.
