TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Junior Shayann Vaezzadeh (Bavent, France) claimed the only win for the University of South Alabama men's tennis team at the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships on Saturday.
Vaezzadeh defeated Iain Sneddon of Tulane 6-4, 6-1, but fell 6-4, 6-4 to Vinod Gowda of Ole Miss in the consolation quarterfinals. The Jaguars went 1-3 on their final day of the tournament.
"Shayann had a good day for the Jags," said USA head coach Nick Brochu. "He beat a really good Tulane player and really pushed the Ole Miss guy. He was aggressive and left everything on the court, all of that dealing with an injury."
Sophomore Gerhard Gruindelingh (Pretoria, South Africa) lost 6-1, 6-2 to William Huyton of Louisiana-Lafayette, while Sebastian Rey of Tulane topped junior Manuel Belda (Posadas, Misiones, Argentina) 6-3, 6-0.
"It has been a long tournament for some guys and it showed today," said Brochu. "We ran out of gas on some courts today. We need to get back home and train harder."
South Alabama returns to action Oct. 25-27 at the USTA Clay Court Tournament in Orlando, Fla.
