TULSA, Okla. - University of South Alabama's
Daniel Leitner (Niederfischbach, Germany) wrapped up play Tuesday at the ITA All-American Championships hosted by the University of Tulsa.
Leitner, ranked No. 50, was eliminated in the second qualifying round by No. 81 Romain Kalaydjian of University of San Diego. Leitner dropped a 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) decision.
"It has been a hard tournament for Daniel," said USA head coach Nick Brochu. "He didn't feel the ball well and wasn't able to play at the level he is capable. You can't win matches at the All-Americans if you don't play your best tennis. Nonetheless, Daniel was in position to come back and win the second set today, he even had a set point. He just made some crucial mistakes."
Kalaydjian finished last season with an 18-18 overall record and earned an All-West Coast Conference Honorable Mention in singles for the 2013 season.
"I am very disappointed because this tournament was a big opportunity for me," said Leitner. "Now I just need to focus on regionals next week, which is also a big tournament. I have a week to practice hard and fix a few things."
Leitner and the Jaguars will be back in action at the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Oct. 10-14.
