NEW ORLEANS
– The University of South Alabama men’s tennis program won three titles – two singles and one doubles – on the final day of the Big Easy Classic Sunday at the University Tennis Center.

The Jaguars finished third in the team standings with 34 points behind New Orleans (56) and Nicholls State (41). The standings are based on points accumulated through wins in the main draw (2 points) and consolation draw (1 point).

Sophomore Daniel Leitner (Niederfischbach, Germany) took the Flight 1 championship over teammate Shayann Vaezzadeh (Bavent, France), sophomore Blake Gregor (Griffith, New South Wales, Australia) won in Flight 2 and Leitner and senior Cody Hall (Albuquerque, N.M.) teamed up to claim the Flight 1 doubles crown.

“It was a good day for the Jags,” said USA head coach Nick Brochu. “Overall, we dominated. I believe we came into this tournament as one of the favorites and we sure showed it. Daniel and Blake played amazing tennis this weekend. It was great to see our latest addition to Jags tennis, Shayann, reach the final of the top draw. As a coach, you can't ask for better than having two Jag players in the final of the A draw.”

Leitner defeated Vaezzadeh in straight sets 7-6 (5), 6-2. Leitner went 3-0 on the weekend and did not lose a set. Gregor also won all six sets in claiming his second fall title in as many seasons, dropping Vinay Kamineni of New Orleans 6-3, 6-3.

In doubles action, Leitner and Hall dispatched Ricardo Campos and Hossam Meligy of UNO 8-6.

“We looked great in doubles also,” Brochu added. “Cody and Daniel were dominant and took care of business by eliminating every opponent on their way to the title of the A draw. It is a great start for the fall. We’re looking forward to competing hard again next week in Hattiesburg.”

The Jags return to action next weekend for the Southern Miss Invitational.
