VARGA ANNOUNCES GWIN AS SECOND JAGUAR SOCCER ASSISTANT COACH

New University of South Alabama women's soccer assistant coach, Brandon Gwin.
MOBILE, Ala. – University of South Alabama head women’s soccer coach Mike Varga announced on Tuesday that former Louisiana State volunteer assistant coach Brandon Gwin has joined the Jaguar coaching staff ahead of the 2012 campaign.

Gwin spent the previous two seasons with LSU assisting with the development of a talented pool of Tiger goalkeepers that included Megan Kinneman, who recorded a new LSU single-season goals-against average (0.66) to earn Southeastern Conference All-Freshman-Team honors in 2010. Under Gwin’s direction, Kinneman posted six shutouts in 14 starts that season, and then-junior Mo Isom added three more to bring the Tigers’ clean sheet total to nine out of 20 total matches two years ago.

After graduating from Catholic High School in Baton Rouge, La. in 2006, Gwin spent two seasons in the net for the Premier Development League’s Baton Rouge Capitals during 2007 and 2008. Before joining the LSU staff, Gwin spent five seasons as a varsity, junior varsity and goalkeepers coach at Catholic High, while also serving a four-year stint as a ‘keeper coach with the Baton Rouge Soccer Association.

"We are fortunate to have someone with Brandon's background joining the soccer staff," said Varga. "Brandon has experience at a high-level program under the guidance of coach Brian Lee, who I have a tremendous amount of respect for. Brandon has worked with some quality goalkeepers and that won't change here at South Alabama. He inherits a quality group of goalkeepers that are eager to work hard and get better every day.  Brandon will fit well into our program and has a lot to offer."

Gwin joins fifth-year Jaguar assistant coach Brian Diaz and third-year volunteer assistant Chris Rogers under Varga, who enters his 14th season with USA as the university’s all-time winningest coach with 113 total victories.
