MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama softball team will travel to Hammond, La. Wednesday for its third matchup of the season with Southeastern Louisiana at 6 p.m. at North Oak Park.
The Jaguars enter the contest looking to improve their 27-12 overall record after an undefeated week. South Alabama took down No. 21/22 Florida State 3-1 in Tallahassee, Fla. on April 12 before securing back-to-back shutouts of Southern Miss on April 14-15.
Overall, USA hold a 1.98 ERA with sophomore Hannah Campbell leading the way. Campbell has posted an ERA of 2.20 and a 16-8 record this year. She has struck out 150 batters in 149.2 innings of work. Freshman Farish Beard (3-1) has also stepped into the spotlight recently. Beard has tossed 30 Ks in 22.2 innings in the circle while only allowing two earned runs.
Offensively, the Jags have gotten production throughout their lineup with eight student-athletes hitting .250 or better and five student-athletes averaging over .300 at the plate. South Alabama is batting .292 as a team this season. Junior Meghan Collins is on top with a .349 average while freshman Blair Johnson (.339) and junior Brittany Fowler (.336) are right behind her. Johnson has notched a team-leading 43 hits including 11 doubles and a triple. Fowler paces the Jags with a .563 slugging percentage after tallying 10 doubles a triple and five home runs. Fowler also leads the club with 29 RBI.
USA leads the all-time series with SELU 12-1 after beating the Lady Lions twice earlier this season. On Feb. 17, South Alabama downed Southeastern Louisiana 8-1 at the Jacksonville State Invitational before run-ruling the Lady Lions 16-1 on March 7 at Jaguar Field.
Southeastern Louisiana is 9-29 on the year and 5-9 at North Oak Park. Most recently, the Lady Lions split a pair of Southland Conference games with UTSA in Hammond. SELU topped the Roadrunners 4-1 on April 13, before being shut out 4-0 on April 14.
The Lady Lions are hitting .235, collectively. Megan McCollum has a team-best .314 batting average with 32 hits on the season. Meghan Gomez, batting .229 leads the squad with a .514 slugging percentage and eight home runs.
Southeastern Louisiana splits time in the circle between Vicki Honeycutt and Kenna Terry. Honeycutt averages 4.98 earned runs per game while Terry has posted an ERA of 4.46.Terry leads the team with 43 Ks and Honeycutt has recorded 36.
