MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama softball team will round out a five-game road trip Saturday at 2 p.m. when they head to Hattiesburg, Miss. to square off with Southern Miss at the Southern Miss Softball Complex. The Jaguars will then host the Golden Eagles Sunday at 2 p.m. at Jaguar Field.
USA (25-12) enters the weekend on a high note after defeating No. 21/22 Florida State 3-1 on April 12 in Tallahassee Florida. The road has been a tossup for the Jaguars this year as they are 8-8 in away games. Since losing three of its first four home games in the Mardi Gras Invitational Feb. 9-12, South Alabama has not surrendered a contest in Mobile posting a 9-3 mark at Jaguar Field this season.
Sophomore Hannah Campbell paces the Jaguar pitching staff with a 15-8 record and a 2.27 ERA. Campbell has thrown five shutouts and 137 strikeouts in 144.2 innings of work. Senior Katy Neal (5-3) is right behind Campbell with an ERA of 2.57 in 49 innings in the circle.
At the plate, South Alabama is led by junior Brittany Fowler and freshman Blair Johnson. Johnson holds a team-leading .344 batting average and has recorded 42 hits including 11 doubles. Fowler, who is hitting .342, has posted a club-high .568 slugging percentage and 28 RBI.
The Jags are on top of the all-time series with the Golden Eagles, 6-3-1. Last season, USA beat USM 10-2 in Mobile.
Last weekend, USM (12-22) dropped two of three games to Conference USA foe Marshall in Hattiesburg. The Golden Eagles lost game one 2-1 in 12 innings and game two 6-2 before edging Marshall 3-2 in the series finale.
As a team, Southern Miss has a 4.06 ERA. Beth Dietrich (6-9) averages 3.13 earned runs per game. Dietrich has allowed 132 and 62 runs in 111.2 innings.
Caroline Walker and Leslie LeJune are the only two Golden Eagles batting over .300 on the season. Walker leads the team with a .344 average while LeJune is hitting 307. LeJune has racked up 35 hits, 19 runs and 18 RBI. Walker has 39 hits, 19 runs and 9 RBI so far this year.
