KEYSER TIES SCHOOL WINS MARK, WOMEN’S TENNIS SWEEPS HILLSBOROUGH CC

MOBILE, Ala. – The bottom of the lineup for the University of South Alabama women’s tennis team did not lose a game and head coach Jaco Keyser tied the school record for career wins with 127 in the Jaguars’ 7-0 win over Hillsborough Community College Sunday afternoon at the Bruce David Lubel Tennis Courts.

The Jaguars rebound from a loss last Saturday to Florida International and drop the Hawks to 5-5.

“This is a nice milestone,” said Keyser. “Looking back there could and should have been more wins, but I’m confident there is going to be a lot more in the future.”

The South Alabama tandem of senior Alina Volman (Lugansk, Ukraine) and freshman Mariya Krachok (Kiev, Ukraine) set the tone for the match downing Sydnie Sine and McKenzie O’Brien 8-0 on the No. 2 court. In the No. 3 flight freshmen Mary Angela Martin (Mobile, Ala.) and Ramona Ghermani (Bad Wimpfen, Germany) clinched the doubles point with their 8-0 victory over Kaliegh Wagner and Natalie Victoria.

The duo of senior Chané Hines (Johannesburg, South Africa) and sophomore Emily Newton (Dothan, Ala.) followed at the No. 1 spot topping Cassidy Crawford and Sara Johansson 8-3.

“We did a great job in doubles,” said Keyser. “I feel like we’ve been having some really good matches lately. We had good fundamentals and not too many mental breakdowns.”

Krachok whitewashed Wagner 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles followed by Newton’s dominating 6-0, 6-0 victory over Victoria on the No. 6 court.

Martin secured the match for the Jaguars sweeping O’Brien in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 4 flight.

Volman gave up only four games in her 6-3, 6-1 win over Crawford at No. 1 singles. Ghermani defeated Sine 7-5, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot. Hines rallied from behind to top Johansson 6-2, 3-6, (12-10) in the No. 3 position.

“There were some competitive matches,” said Keyser. “We took what we’ve been doing in practice and implemented it into our matches. The key for this upcoming week and the rest of the season is to keep building on practices.”

South Alabama returns to action Thursday when they host Austin Peay at 2 p.m.
