MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama softball team heads to Birmingham, Ala. to take on UAB Wednesday at 4 p.m. at the UAB Softball Field before matching up with Samford at the same time Thursday at Bulldog Field.
The Jaguars (14-6, 3-0 Sun Belt) lost three of their first four games, but have since gone 13-3, including a three-game sweep in their conference-opening series against Louisiana-Monroe. USA currently holds a six-game win streak – the longest of the season thus far.
South Alabama ranks in the top 50 nationally in six statistical categories. The Jags are No. 37 in batting average (.315), No. 34 in scoring (5.95), No. 50 in win-loss percentage (0.7), No. 29 in home runs per game (0.95), No. 25 in doubles per game (1.6) and No. 29 in slugging percentage (.488).
South Alabama has seven players hitting at least .300 on the season, five of which have started all 20 games. Freshman left fielder Alyssa Linn leads the team with a .393 average, earning 24 hits in 61 at bats. Freshman designated player Blair Johnson is USA’s hits leader, with 25 in 68 at bats (.368) while junior short stop Brittany Fowler, batting .362, leads the team in RBI (16) and home runs (4).
As a team, USA has a 2.01 earned run average. The Jags’ lowest ERA belongs to junior Jessica Dobson, who is 2-0 in five starts with a 1.08 ERA. Sophomore lefty Hannah Campbell (6-5) leads the squad with 66 strikeouts after throwing a career-high 14 against ULM on March 10. Campbell has seen the most time in the circle, pitching 71.1 innings with a 2.65 ERA.
South Alabama leads the all-time series with UAB 4-2. Last season at the Hibbett-Easton All-Alabama Classic in Birmingham, the Jaguars downed the Blazers 4-2.
The Blazers improved to 11-9 and 3-0 in Conference USA after sweeping Memphis – who beat USA 3-1 earlier this season – in their first conference series of the year this past weekend at the UAB Softball Field. UAB has only dropped two games at home this year; one to No. 1/2 Alabama and the other to Jacksonville State.
The Jags might see a familiar face in the circle for the Blazers as Campbell’s twin sister Lannah paces UAB with a 1.52 ERA and a 5-3 record after 46 innings of work. L. Campbell has tossed a team-high 55 Ks this season giving up only 12 runs in 10 appearances.
Senior catcher Mandy Lowman is the Blazers’ offensive firepower this season. Lowman holds a .451 batting average, which includes 23 hits, 15 RBI, five home runs and three doubles.
The all-time series with Samford is spilt 1-1 after USA beat the Bulldogs 10-3 at last year’s Hibbett-Easton All-Alabama Classic in Birmingham.
The Bulldogs fell in three games versus Georgia Southern over the weekend giving them a 4-16 overall record and a 0-3 mark in the Southern Conference. Samford’s only four wins this season came over South Dakota, twice, Butler and Columbia.
At the plate, the Bulldogs are led by a pair of freshmen. Shelby Scott is batting .372 while Madison Dickey has a batting average of .324 including 22 hits and three doubles and two home runs. Overall, Samford is hitting .255.
The Bulldogs’ team ERA is 4.22. Misha Aldridge (2-9) has thrown 76.2 innings allowing 88 hits and 45 runs on the year.
