NEW ORLEANS, La. – University of South Alabama junior Brittany Fowler (outfield) and sophomore Hannah Campbell (pitcher), who was also named Sun Belt Conference preseason Pitcher of the Year, earned spots on the 2012 preseason all-SBC team, while the Jaguars were picked to finish second in the league, as announce by the conference office Monday.

"It is always nice for your team and for individual team members to be recognized by the other coaches in the conference,” said USA head coach Becky Clark. “The most important thing for our group right now though is to focus on preparing for opening day and realize that while the recognition for your hard work is nice, it is not the main goal. Our coaches and players understand that all of this will be decided on the field and that we still have a lot of work to do."

Campbell, a Satsuma, Ala. native, was last season’s SBC Freshman of the Year. Campbell was also named to the NFCA all-region team and to the SBC all-conference second team for her work in the circle last season. In 2011, she led to Jags with a 2.51 ERA while tallying a team-high 19-7 record. Campbell led the league in saves (4), while ranking fourth in shutouts (5) and wins.

Fowler is a two-time all-conference player who ended 2011 batting .340. The Jacksonville, Fla. native was also ranked in several categories in the Sun Belt: seventh in slugging percentage (.571), ninth in OBP (.432), fifth in RBI (50) and 10th in total bases (89). Fowler led the Jags in hits (53), RBI (52), sac flies (5), triples (3) and slugging percentage. In 2011, she recorded a team-leading 17 multi-hit games and 14-multi RBI games.

South Alabama received 64 points in the preseason poll, which is voted on by the league’s coaches. Louisiana-Lafayette is the only team to top USA in the preseason standings. The nationally ranked Ragin’ Cajuns are 23rd in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches’ poll while holding
down the No. 24 spot in the USA Softball/ESPN.com poll.
