MOBILE, Ala. – University of South Alabama baseball added to its 2012-13 roster Tuesday when head coach Mark Calvi announced that Matthew Peacock will join the program in the fall.
Peacock, a senior at Saraland High School in Saraland, Ala., helped lead the Spartans to the class 4A area four title and a second-round playoff appearance in the school’s first varsity season in 2011. The right-hander struck out 58 batters and posted a 3.42 ERA on the mound.
Offensively, Peacock recorded a team-best .440 batting average with three home runs and 32 RBI while posting a .664 slugging percentage and .519 on-base percentage en route to earning 4A all-state honorable mention from the Alabama Sports Writers Association as a designated hitter.
“Matt is a guy who really came on in the fall,” Calvi said. “When we saw him, he was 83 to 86 (miles per hour) in the summer. The next thing you know, (pitching) coach (Bob) Keller when out to see him in the fall and he was mid-to-upper 80s with a really good curveball and was touching 90 miles per hour. He is a local guy who is a solid student-athlete. It just seems like a good fit for he and his family as well as us, and I think the future is bright for him here.”
