Complete Schedule
MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama men’s tennis team will participate in two tournaments and visit the states of Florida, Georgia, Tennessee and Texas in the 2013 spring schedule released on Wednesday.
The Jaguars will host four home matches and face five teams that finished ranked in the top 75 last year.
“This is probably one of the best schedules we’ve had in a long time,” said USA head coach
Nick Brochu. “It’s going to be very challenging. We are playing a lot of ranked opponents which means lots of opportunities. We’re not only looking for wins, but we’re looking to have quality wins.”
USA begins the spring season on Jan. 20 at Florida A&M before facing Florida State on Jan. 21 in Tallahassee, Fla.
The Jags travel further south the following weekend with matches in Gainesville, Fla. against North Carolina-Wilmington (Jan. 26) and Florida and St. John’s (Jan. 27).
The Jaguars open play at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts against New Orleans on Feb. 3.
South Alabama will take on Mississippi State Feb. 10 in Starkville, Miss. and Southern Miss Feb. 13 in Hattiesburg, Miss.
“I’m looking forward to the match against Mississippi State,” said Brochu. “They are ranked in the top 15 in the nation and we were able to add them to our schedule this season.”
A trip to Atlanta, Ga. will close out the month of February when the Jaguars face Georgia State on Feb. 22 and George Washington on Feb. 23.
Home matches against Nicholls State (March 7) and Winthrop (March 9) follow a return trip to the H-E-B Tournament of Champions on March 1-2, hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Spring Break sees USA visit the state of Florida for three matches. The Jags travel to South Florida (March 12), North Florida (March 13) and Stetson (March 15).
South Alabama will close out the month of March at the MTSU Invitational in Murfreesboro, Tenn. (March 30-31).
“I think the main core of our schedule is teams that are ranked No. 40-75 in the nation,” said Brochu. “Some of those are even conference rivals such as Middle Tennessee.”
The home schedule concludes with Sun Belt opponent Troy on April 4.
The Jaguars finish the regular season April 13 and 14 in Memphis, Tenn. against UAB and Memphis.
The Sun Belt Championships will be held April 18-20 in Lafayette, La.
“This year is going to be tough because we are on the road constantly,” said Brochu. “The whole season being on the road will be a good warm up for the conference tournament in Lafayette. It is a little bit of a hostile environment there and the crowd is very loud, but we’re looking forward to going over there and really playing hard and hopefully coming back with a trophy.”
