MOBILE, Ala. – Troy scored four runs in the sixth and eighth innings to outlast University of South Alabama baseball 10-7 Saturday afternoon at Stanky Field.

South Alabama (29-26, 15-15 SBC) held a 3-2 lead heading into the top of the sixth inning. But the Trojans tacked on four runs in the frame to take a 6-3 lead. Todd McRae delivered a bases-loaded, two-run single that chased Jaguar starter Carlton Paris from the game. Hayden Hillyer followed with an RBI single that also allowed McRae to score after a misplay by USA right fielder Nolan Earley in right field.

The Jags cut the Trojan lead to 6-4 in the bottom of the seventh when Hunt Griffith drew a bases-loaded walk from Troy right-hander Tyson Workman.

But the Trojans answered with four runs in the top of the eighth, highlighted by a bases-loaded, two-run single by Adam Bryant. Shear added an RBI single, and the Trojans added their fourth run of the frame when Hannah moved to third on a passed ball and scored when Tanner’s throw sailed into left field.

The Jags scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth on RBI singles by Griffith, Jeff DeBlieux and Jake Overstreet to cut the USA lead to 10-7. South Alabama brought the tying run to the plate with two outs in the form of Brent Tanner, but Workman induced a game-ending flyout to center field.

Workman (5-3) earned the win in seven innings, allowing five runs on eight hits while striking out six and issuing six walks. Paris (3-5) suffered the loss in five innings, and allowed six runs on six hits with three strikeouts and three walks.

Shear went 3-for-4 with a double, one RBI and two runs scored to lead Troy at the plate. T.J. Rivera had two hits, while Bryant and McRae drove in two runs apiece.

Jake Overstreet went 3-for-5 with one RBI to lead the Jaguars offensively. Hunt Griffith went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, and Brad Hook finished 2-for-4 with one RBI. Tanner added two hits in the game.

Troy (40-16, 21-9 SBC) scored the game’s first run in the top of the second on a fielding error by Logan Kirkland, but the Jags answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame on RBI singles by Hook and Griffith.

Trojan third baseman Tyler Hannah tied the game 2-2 in the top of the third with a solo home run to right field.

Workman pitched out of a two-out, bases-loaded jam with the game tied in the bottom of the third when Jordan Patterson grounded out to second to end the inning, after Overstreet singled and Tanner and Hook reached on walks.

USA loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth with one out, and managed to push one run across when Patterson drew a walk from Workman to give the Jags a 3-2 lead.

South Alabama stranded 15 runners in the game, and left the bases loaded in three separate innings.

“I thought our guys came out and swung the bats really well,” South Alabama head coach Steve Kittrell said. “I thought Troy made a good move by bringing (Tyson) Workman in; he changed the whole tempo of the game. He threw a lot of offspeed stuff – a really good changeup. He was the difference in the game. We had trouble getting big hits off of him with men on base.”

South Alabama will return to action Thu., May 26, when it takes on Louisiana-Lafayette at 11 a.m. in the first round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament in Monroe, La.
