MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama baseball team will host Auburn in its final non-conference game of the season at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Stanky Field.
South Alabama (27-24) has won five of its last six games, and enters Tuesday’s contest 4-1 in its last five games after taking two of three from Western Kentucky last weekend in Bowling Green, Ky.
The Jaguars defeated Auburn 7-1 earlier this season in Auburn, Ala., and will be in search of their first season sweep of the Tigers since 2008. South Alabama is 46-22 all-time against Auburn, and 26-9 all-time against the Tigers at Stanky Field. South Alabama head coach Steve Kittrell is 18-13 all-time against Auburn.
USA right-hander Jarrett Bailey (0-0) will get the start on the mound for South Alabama, while Auburn right-hander Andrew Morris (2-3) will start on the bump for the Tigers.
Auburn (28-24) enters the game 3-2 in its last five contests, which includes two wins over Alabama last weekend. The Tigers split a pair of midweek games last week, falling to Samford 9-8 in 10 innings Tuesday evening before rebounding to defeat Alabama State 7-5 on Wednesday.
Auburn is 6-10 in road games this season, while South Alabama is 17-9 at Stanky Field. The Tigers have dropped five consecutive road games, dating back to April 17 when they fell 3-2 at LSU.
South Alabama is 7-3 in its last 10 games at Stanky Field, and is averaging nearly 13 hits and nearly 10 runs per game during that span. As a team, the Jaguars are hitting .314 at Stanky Field this season while scoring an average of seven runs per game. USA is 13-11 in non-conference games this season, and 8-6 at Stanky Field versus non-conference opponents. South Alabama is hitting .305 in non-conference games, and averaging six runs per contest.
South Alabama leads the Sun Belt Conference in sacrifice flies (30), and ranks third in hits (526) and doubles (101). The Jags are fourth in the league batting average (.294), runs scored (320), RBI (285) and total bases (729).
Brent Tanner leads the Jaguars with a .338 batting average, eight home runs and 47 RBI. He also leads the team in slugging percentage (.525), and ranks second in on-base percentage (.435).
Casey McElroy leads Auburn with a .362 batting average, with seven homers and 50 RBI. He also leads the Tigers in slugging percentage (.543).
Auburn is hitting .301 as a team entering Tuesday’s contest, and is averaging nearly six runs per game.
Prior to Tuesday’s game, former Jaguar Zach Grichor will be honored in a pregame ceremony to celebrate his selection to the 2010 Rawlings Gold Glove team.
