MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama baseball team will put its season-best five-game win streak on the line Tuesday when it travels to Auburn, Ala., for a 6 p.m. contest with Auburn at Plainsman Park.
The Jaguars are 45-22 all-time against the Tigers, and 18-12 when playing at Auburn. USA head coach Steve Kittrell is 16-11 all-time against Auburn. The Jaguars split a pair of games with the Tigers last season, falling 6-2 at Auburn before taking a 10-9 decision in 11 innings at Stanky Field. USA is 1-1 against Southeastern Conference schools this season after splitting a pair of games with Alabama.
Jaguar right-hander Jeff Miller (0-3) will make his fifth start of the season, and will go against Auburn right-hander Bradley Hendrix (1-0).
South Alabama (20-16) went 5-0 last week after defeating Nicholls State and Tulane in midweek games, and sweeping UALR in a three-game Sun Belt Conference series at Stanky Field. The Jaguars batted .431 over the five-game stretch, and scored 58 runs on 81 hits. USA recorded 10-plus hits in every game last week, and scored 10-plus runs in all three games of its series against UALR. The Jags averaged 11.6 runs and just over 16 hits per game on the week. South Alabama recorded 21 extra-base hits in five games, and raised its team batting average from .287 to .309.
USA batted .427 in three games against UALR, and scored 41 runs on 47 hits in the series including a season-high 20 runs in Friday’s series opener. The Jags recorded 17 extra-base hits in the series, and earned their second consecutive sweep over UALR in as many seasons.
Jaguar shortstop Logan Kirkland extended his hitting streak to 21 games over the weekend, while Taylor White extended his season-best hitting streak to 12 games. Kirkland ranks second among Jaguars in batting average (.374) and third in hits (52). White leads the Sun Belt Conference with 15 stolen bases, and leads South Alabama with 56 hits.
USA catcher Brent Tanner was named SBC Player of the Week after batting .600 with three doubles, a home run, six RBI and eight runs scored to lead South Alabama to five consecutive wins last week. He finished with 18 total bases and a 1.540 OPS on the week. Tanner recorded multiple hits in three of the Jaguars’ five games, and drove in at least one run in four of five games.
Tanner leads South Alabama in batting average (.376), home runs (7), RBI (33), total bases (86), slugging percentage (.610) and on-base percentage (.458), and has increased his batting average 11 points over the Jaguars’ last five games. In his last 10 games, Tanner is batting .476 with five home runs, four doubles and 17 RBI. During that span, the Lucedale, Miss., native has recorded six multiple-hit and four multiple-RBI games.
Auburn (20-15) is 4-1 in its last five games after taking two of three games from No. 21 LSU in Baton Rouge, La., over the weekend. The Tigers swept Kentucky in Lexington before its three-game set at LSU.
Auburn is 2-1 against Sun Belt schools this season, after splitting a pair of games with Troy and defeating Western Kentucky. The Tigers are 11-9 at Plainsman Park this season, and enter Tuesday’s contest with a three-game home losing streak after being swept by No. 1 Vanderbilt April 1-3.
Casey McElroy leads Auburn with a .372 batting average, and is the team leader in runs scored (32), hits (54), RBI (36), total bases (84) and slugging percentage (.579). McElroy shares the team lead in home runs (6) with Tony Caldwell.
